That being said, current Reliant Energy customers should still shop around when their plan ends - several negative online reviews noted higher rates upon renewals.

|Plan Type||Contract Length||Features||Early termination fee*||Our Thoughts|
|Fixed rate plans||12, 24 months||
|$150 - 295||
Recommended: The basic 24 month plan will probably result in greater savings for most customers than the plans offering incentive gifts (but keep in mind slightly higher /kWh rates)
||$0||Not Recommended: Consumers should avoid variable rate plans because prices can be higher than expected, unless there is a specific need for a prepaid plan.|
|Home Solar||12 Sell back||
||$0||Recommended: 100% from wind energy.|
*Early Termination Fee does not apply if customer moves.
Explanation of Plan Options
Fixed Rate Plans
A fixed rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) does not change over the whole period of the contract. Once the contract is finished, unless you renew it or terminate it, it will automatically switch to a variable rate. Find out more about fixed rate energy offers.
Customers report that they appreciate savings on fixed rate electricity plans from Reliant Energy. Fixed rate plans can often be a good deal if you are able to lock in a good rate at the right time of year. In particular, consumers who are able to adjust their consumption habits to take advantage of lower rates at night or in the morning may find TruSmart's nights and weekends plans to be a good deal.
Electricity customers should opt for fixed rate contracts of 12 months or more. Electricity prices per kilowatt-hour fluctuate throughout the year, and you may actually lose money by not being able to take advantage of prices when they are low. However, because electricity prices tend to increase over time, locking in fixed rates for longer periods may prove advantageous and deliver savings.
Variable Rate Plans
A variable rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) varies each month. A variable can be at the discretion of the supplier, or the supplier can give rules on the variability of their rate. Find out more about variable rates for electricity.
Reliant applies a monthly base charge of $6.75. A base charges to some plans if usage is under a certain kWh/month floor.
Green Energy Plans
Reliant Energy does offer 100% green energy plans. The 6% renewable content included in their plans is below the state average of 10.7%.

About Reliant Energy
Reliant Energy's beginnings lie in the development of the electricity industry in Texas itself. The Houston Electric Light & Power Company (HEL&P), founded in 1882, brought electricity to the city for the first time. It was reorganized as the Houston Lighting and Power Company (HL&P) in 1901, and provided electricity generation, transmission, distribution and sales to customers within its service territory. In 1999 its name changed to Reliant Energy HL&P/Entex.
Deregulation of the Texas electricity industry in 2002 meant that the company had to split its various activities into separate companies. In 2003 the company split into Reliant Energy (which covered retail sales), Texas Genco (generation), and CenterPoint Energy (transmission and distribution). Reliant Energy was acquired by NRG Energy in 2009. The company now serves over 1.5 million residential and commercial customers throughout the state of Texas.
