Signing up for National Fuel service in Buffalo

If you are moving into a new home in the Buffalo area, you will need to visit the Buffalo office or call National Fuel's main customer service line at least ten days before your planned move. This is because a natural gas technician will need to come to your home before turning on service, in order to get an accurate meter reading.

You will need to give the following information to open a new account:

  • Full Name
  • Social Security Number
  • New Address
  • Planned Move In Date

National Fuel's main customer service line is 1-716-686-6123. If you are calling from outside of New York state, call 1-800-365-3234.

Switching to an Alternate ESCO Supplier

National Fuel is your local utility, which means they are your automatic natural gas provider in Buffalo. National Fuel covers your supply and delivery services, which cover:

  1. Delivery, or all costs related to getting energy to your home
  2. Supply, or the cost of energy you consume + customer service fees

All National Fuel customers have the power to choose their own alternate Energy Supply Company (ESCO) or their natural gas supply - and save.

Before choosing an ESCO, you will need to set up your National Fuel account first. This is because the ESCO needs your account information to take over your supply service. There are normally no fees to begin ESCO service, but there are other common contract terms that you should be informed about.

Most ESCOs offer both fixed and variable rate options, but we recommend choosing fixed rate plans with alternate suppliers. Learn more about how ESCOs work.

Terminating Service

If you are moving out of National Fuel service territory, you will need to call customer service or visit your local Buffalo office at least ten days in advance to be sure that you are not billed for extra days. A natural gas technician will need to go to your home to get a final meter reading, so that you are billed for a correct amount.

In order to avoid cancellation fees, you will need to contact your ESCO in advance of your move, usually 30 days notice is required. Be sure to look at your ESCO contract to have an idea of what steps to take.

Bill Charges with National Fuel

Your National Fuel bill is divided up by supply, delivery, and tax charges. Most residential customers are charged under the SC1 rate class.

The New York Public Service Commission (NYPSC) regulates your National Fuel rates. This means there can be no change in the rates you pay for natural gas per cubic foot, unless NYPSC agrees that there have been real changes in the cost of doing business at National Fuel.

National Fuel's Background

National Fuel serves over 732,000 natural gas customers in New York and parts of Pennsylvania. In addition to serving Buffalo customers, National Fuel service also covers cities in western New York like Jamestown and Niagara Falls.
