We detail how to switch to Green Mountain Energy in New York state, price offers available in your area, and how switching affects your service.

Choosing an ESCO

The state of New York opened energy to competition in 1998, giving residents the right to choose their own alternate Energy Supply Company (ESCO) for electricity and natural gas. While ESCOs take over the supply of your energy, your local utility will always cover delivery services.

Green Mountain Energy is one such ESCO, serving green electricity to choice customers across most of New York State. Depending on your location, Green Mountain Energy may offer competitive rates in comparison to your local utility.

Will My Utility Mind if I Sign Up with Green Mountain Energy?

Here's the short answer: No.

All New Yorkers are allowed to switch their supply service to an ESCO, and your utility company still gets to keep you as a customer no matter what.

How does this work? Well, your local utility will always take care of your delivery service, or the costs related to getting electricity to your home. If you switch to an ESCO like Green Mountain Energy, your new ESCO only takes over supply service, which includes the actual cost of energy you consume and customer service fees.

Your local utility will always provide some of your service if you switch. Further, the New York Public Service Commission (NYPSC) made utility companies accept your right to choose a long time ago.
