Savings on Fixed Rates

Customers report that they are pleased with the amount they can save compared to their local utility on fixed rate plans with Marathon Energy.

We recommend fixed rate contracts with alternate suppliers like Marathon Energy. By locking in a competitive rate for the right amount of time, customers can save on the rate they pay for natural gas per therm or electricity per kilowatt-hour .

Because natural gas prices are actually falling over time, but change a lot from one season to the next, we recommend natural gas contracts of 12 months or fewer. Customers can save if they lock in competitive rates during the winter, when natural gas is actually the cheapest.

Electricity prices increase over time, but fluctuate so much over the course of a year that customers on fixed rate plans may not be able to take advantage of price decreases during a one year period. For this reason we recommend electricity contracts of 18 months or more.

We do not recommend variable rate plans, because they are not regulated by your state government and can become more expensive than rates available with your local utility.

Great Customer Service Reviews

With an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) as of March 2015, Marathon Energy has a reputation for top customer service relations.

The BBB reports that Marathon Energy has a top track record of responding effectively and quickly to customer concerns. Additionally, it receives a relatively low number of complaints for a business of its size.

Assertive Telemarketing Allegations

Some customers report that they have received an excessive number of telemarketing calls from Marathon Energy. There have been allegations that the company may call multiple times with the same day to try to capture new customers.

Unstable Variable Rates

Variable rates may fluctuate more than customers expect with Marathon Energy. Some consumers have felt that these plans have not been a good deal, because rates can become higher than expected.
