XOOM Energy, LLC is a North Carolina-based retail energy provider that offers residential and commercial electricity service to consumers living in deregulate energy states across the US and Canada. In Texas, XOOM Energy competes against the other 75+ retail electric providers by offering electric plans that fund charitable causes, like PetSmart Charities and Driscoll Children's Hospital. XOOM Energy plans come with fixed and variable rates, a renewable energy plan (on a fixed rate), and the XOOM Xtras customer loyalty program. XOOM Energy Texas LLC

Compared to many retail electric providers in Texas, XOOM Energy LLC is relatively new to the Lone Star state's electric market - receiving Texas certification to operate in the state in 2011. Most of the bigger and established electric providers opened their doors to business when Texas deregulated the market in 2002.

In 2018, Reliant Energy parent NRG Energy acquired XOOM Energy.

XOOM Energy has a history of class action lawsuits in some states, with claims of allegedly using "bait and switch" tactics. The electric provider settled a suit in Maryland recently, paying out over half a million dollars to affected customers.

XOOM Energy service area: Texas

Texans can sign-up with a XOOM Energy plan who reside within the deregulated retail electric service areas of the investor-owned utility companies, which include:
 Oncor Electric Delivery
 CenterPoint Energy
 AEP Texas North & Central
 Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP)

XOOM Energy does a great job at making sure the XOOM Energy plan offering is consistent throughout the entire state. For instance, XOOM Energy in Waco and Temple will have a very similar plans as XOOM Energy in Weslaco, Brownsville, McAllen, and Corpus Christi.

However, as you'll see in the XOOM Energy plans section below, AEP Texas Central residents are given an opportunity to sign up to a plan that donates to Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi and Victoria!

In 2020, XOOM Energy made spot #30 on the list of the most formal complaints received against retail electric providers in Texas out of the 76 REPs registered, according to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of Texas. While some customers appreciate XOOM Energy's competitive rates and renewable energy option, unsatisfied customers have found a particular issue with billing services. In fact, 75% of all formal complaints filed with the PUC were regarding XOOM Energy's billing practices.

XOOM Energy plans are offered in all investor-owned utility company service areas and, for the most part, include nearly identical plan types. The only exception is within the AEP Texas Central service area, where consumers are not offered the 24-month term SureLock. • The XOOM Energy SureLock plan: Paperless "Tree Free" billing and AutoPay discounts in 12-, *24-, and 36-month terms
  • The XOOM Energy RescueLock plan: 5% of your monthly energy charges will be donated to PetSmart Charities, only available in a 12-month contract

XOOM Energy fixed rate plans

A fixed rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) does not change over the whole period of the contract. Once the contract is finished, unless you renew it or terminate it, it will automatically switch to a variable rate plan.

Fixed rate plans can often be a good deal if you are able to lock in a good rate at the right time of year.

Electricity customers should opt for fixed rate contracts of at least 12 months. Electricity prices per kilowatt-hour fluctuate throughout the year, and you may actually lose money by not being able to take advantage of prices when they are low. However, because electricity prices tend to increase over time, locking in fixed rates for longer periods may prove advantageous and deliver savings.

XOOM Energy variable rate plan

 The XOOM Energy SimpleFlex plan

A variable rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) may change each month or at least 2-3 times per year. A variable can be at the discretion of the supplier, or the supplier can give rules on the variability of their rate - for example, that the energy rate for customers varies alongside the wholesale price of energy.

Base Charges with XOOM Energy

All XOOM energy plans have a base charge fee applied to them, regardless of contract length, of $4.99 per month. The base fee / base charge is an optional charge that providers choose to impose on to customers. Some electric providers, like TXU Energy and Reliant Energy charge base fees on their plans as well, but there are many electric providers that only charge the energy rate.

Green energy plan by XOOM Energy

 The XOOM Energy SimpleClean plan

The XOOM Energy SimpleClean plan does not offer 100% green energy content, with the renewably-sourced content being only 50%. Although it's admirable that XOOM Energy has an offering, the 50% renewable content involved really falls short compared to the green energy plans from other electric providers.

XOOM's non-renewable plans source a mere 12% renewable content, which is substantially low compared to the Texas average of 21%.

XOOM Energy : Early cancellation fees! If deciding to become a XOOM Energy customer, it's worth taking into consideration the flat, "Early Termination Fee" that is attached to all fixed rate electric plans.
12-month contract : $150
24-month contract : $200
36-month contract : $250
