The TDU (Transmission & Distribution Utility)- aka electric utility company- for Arlington and the surrounding Tarrant County area is Oncor Electric Delivery. Oncor has over 70 Retail Electric Providers working to serve over 3.8 million Texas homes and businesses that span the East, West, and North-Central state regions. Arlington joins other major cities like Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Irving, Killeen, Midland, Waco, Tyler, and Wichita Falls covered by Oncor.

Oncor oversees power production for several Arlington neighborhoods, such as:

Moving to Arlington - Tarrant County (i.e. 76010, 76011, 76013, 76014 76119, 76137 etc.) and need to start electricity service with Oncor Electric Delivery?

Since Oncor Electric Delivery is the main utility company in the area, more than likey they will be producing the power for your future home. Texas New Mexico Power (TNMP), however, is another utility company that has presence in surrounding communities like Lewisville and Gatesville. If you´re not sure which electric utility is established in the area, your best bet would be to contact either utility company to ensure you get set up correctly with service. Start by contacting Oncor's customer service line listed below to find out whether they provide service to your address. If Oncor doesn't cover your location, give TNMP's customer service line a call to confirm. If you keep striking out, just continue down the list of utilities companies (ordered by "likelihood of service area" near Arlington) until you can confirm which one covers your home.

  • Oncor Electric Delivery's customer service: 888-313-6862
  • Texas New Mexico Power's (TNMP) customer service: 888-866-7456
  • AEP Texas North's customer service: 877-373-4858
  • AEP Texas Central's customer service: 877-373-4858
  • CenterPoint Energy's customer service: 800-427-7142

Perhaps a more efficient way to find out which TDU produces your electricity is by using the ESI ID / ESID on the electric meter at your new address. Inside this long number is a code to identify which utility company the meter pertains to. This entire ESID number is anywhere between 17 and 22 digits long, but all that is needed are five of those (the numbers in spots 3 to 7). The first two numbers will be a ´´10´´ (which are irrelevant) followed by the five digit TDU identity code. [For example: ´´10number6995670100]

After sorting out which utility company covers your area (and the base prices it pushes through REPs and to end consumers), the only other step is to shop for a Retail Energy Provider (at least a REP can be chosen whereas the utility company comes with your home)! Feel free to check out the Full List of Retail Electric Providers in Texas. Once decided, starting service is pretty straightforward. To open an account in your name you will simply need to call your ideal REP and provide:

  • Your exact address (including your street address, unit number, city/town, and zip code)
  • Your full name and contact information (phone number, email, address)
  • The date you require service (in other words, the date you move in)

Many REPs require a security deposit to activate accounts for new customers, so you may also be asked for your Social Security Number (SSN) in order for the provider to perform a credit check.

For a starting point, here are a few of the most recognized electric companies in Texas:

As a great reference for research into REPs operating in Texas, check out the Public Utility Commission of Texas website. They maintain a fairly current listing of formal Complaint statistics for Energy providers that include formal complaints filed, billing problems, documented cases of slamming/cramming, and service quality experiences by customers. Working from the bottom of the list to the top might be the most efficient way to go about finding your next provider since the list ranks the REPs from the highest to lowest on number of issues they have had.
