Description of the Plan Types
Fixed rate plans
A fixed rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) does not change over the whole period of the contract. Once the contract is finished, unless you renew it or terminate it, it will automatically switch to a variable rate. Customers report that they appreciate savings on fixed rate electricity plans from Tara Energy. Fixed rate plans can often be a good deal if you are able to lock in a good rate at the right time of year. Consumers who use more than 1000 kWh/month could find good savings with Tara's plans targetting higher-use customers.
Electricity customers should opt for fixed rate contracts of 12 months or more. Electricity prices per kilowatt-hour fluctuate throughout the year, and you may actually lose money by not being able to take advantage of prices when they are low. However, because electricity prices tend to increase over time, locking in fixed rates for longer periods may prove advantageous and deliver savings.
Variable rate plans
A variable rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) varies each month. A variable can be at the discretion of the supplier, or the supplier can give rules on the variability of their rate.
