Thinking of converting to natural gas? Here are a few reasons to make the switch

reasons to switch to natural gas

 It's Cheaper

Natural gas is a cheap fuel: it costs less than heating oil, and doesn't require maintenance and equipment costs typically associated with oil heat, such as pumps, motors, filters and permits. What's more, natural gas appliances cost less money to run than electric appliances.

 It's Better for the Environment

Natural gas burns cleaner than heating oil, and depending on what your state's electricity generation mix, may be a cleaner choice than electricity. Natural gas produces 45 percent less carbon dioxide than coal, and natural gas appliances tend to be more efficient than electric ones, meaning less fuel is required to get the job done.

 It's Convenient

As it is piped directly to your home, you don't need to worry about deliveries or running out of fuel. For example, switching to a natural gas barbecue means that you'll no longer worry about running out of propane or charcoal. Switch to a natural gas fireplace and enjoy heat with the simple push of a button.

 It's Versatile

Natural gas can be used for more than just heating. It can also be used for cooking (both indoors for your stove or oven and outdoors for your barbecue), fireplaces, or even for clothes dryers. What's more, natural gas-fired appliances are faster and more efficient than electric appliances. According to Alagasco, a new high-efficiency natural gas furnace and cooling system can save up to $1,200 a year in operating costs.

You Could Get A Rebate on Installation or on Appliance Upgrades

Many utilities and local governments offer rebates and other incentives to switch to natural gas. Check with your local utility to see what they offer and whether you qualify.

Orange and Rockland Customer?O&R and PCL&P are offering a $500 rebate to qualifying residential customers who convert their oil or propane heating system to natural gas by December 31, 2015. O&R also offers rebates for installation of high-efficiency gas heating systems. Call O&R or PCL&P for more information.

 It's Reliable

Most gas appliances continue to work even during power outage. And since the natural gas delivery system is underground, outages are extremely rare.
