Ambit Energy : Electricity plans with fixed rates
A fixed rate is the ¢/kWh energy cost whose rated price does not change over term of the contract. Once the contract is finished, unless you renew it or terminate it, it will automatically switch to a variable rate.
Electricity customers looking for a fixed rate plan should choose a plan with a term of 12 months or longer. Electricity prices per kilowatt-hour change throughout the year, and you may actually lose money by not being able to take advantage of prices when they are low.

Ambit Energy : Electricity plans with variable rates
A variable rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) changes from month to month. A variable rate is at the discretion of the provider, or the provider can give rules on the variability of their rate.
Like most electric providers, Ambit Energy offers a variable rate plan with no contract term or termination fee - so customers can leave the plan (or provider) at any time without charge.

Base fee charges (a monthly fee) are often applied to plans, or may kick-in when consumption drops under a certain level (often considered a minimum usage fee charge). Nearly all plans with Ambit Energy use base fee charges regardless of kWh use per month, and most of the base fee charges in Ambit's plans is $9.95 per month.

Green energy in Ambit Energy electricity plans
Ambit offers a 100% green energy plan, which is partially sourced from Texas-based wind energy (up to 49% is out of state). Ambit Energy's standard plans include 6% renewable content, which is substantially less than the state average of 21%.
Promotions by Ambit Energy
Apart from the 0.2¢/kWh Energy charge reduction when enrolled in paperless billing and autopay, Ambit Energy also offers an interesting referral program called Free Energy. To qualify for credits and "...reduce your energy costs by 100%.", you need to refer 15 new customers to Ambit.
Texas Power Payback™ uses smart meters, conserve energy and potentially avoid rolling blackouts: Ambit energy sends out an alert by email or phone, customers reduce usage immediately in any way possible (adjusting thermostat, turn off appliances, etc), and Ambit will apply up to a $1.00 credit for every kWh saved during the designated time

In 2020, Ambit Energy made the "Top 10" list (#6) of highest formal complaints received against retail electric providers in Texas, according to the Public Utilities Commission of Texas.
