The history of TXU Energy

TXU Energy's origins lie in the history of the electricity industry in Texas itself. The Dallas Electric Lighting Company was founded in 1882, and brought electric light to communities in northern Texas. In 1912, the Texas Power & Light Company (TP&L) consolidated 13 electric companies (including the Dallas Electric Lighting Company) into one. This company became part of the Texas Utilities Company in 1945, which served communities in the Dallas & Fort Worth areas, as well as the areas west of Abilene.

In 1993 the company expanded operations to eastern Texas with the acquisition of the Southwestern Electric Service Company (SESCO). In 1999 the company rebranded as TXU Corporation. At this time the company was the largest provider of electricity and natural gas in the state of Texas.

Deregulation of the Texas electricity industry in 2002 meant that TXU Corporation had to split its various activities into separate companies. TXU Energy started as a Texas retail electricity provider at this time. In 2007 its parent company, TXU Corporation, was bought by private equity firms KKR, TPG Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners. The company was reorganized as Energy Future Holdings Corp (EFH), with the utility company Oncor Electric Delivery as its electric distribution business, TXU Energy as its retail electricity business, and Luminant as its electric generation business.

In April, 2014, Energy Future Holdings and certain of its subsidiaries, including TXU Energy, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization. This was confirmed by the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware in December, 2015.
