TXU Energy is known as one of the largest retail electric providers in Texas. TXU Energy is often mistaken for a "utility company" that must be used - when, in fact, TXU Energy is a 100% optional provider and competes with over 75 other electric providers. TXU Energy has millions of customers across Texas, so be sure to check out the TXU Energy reviews if considering any TXU Energy plans. TXU Energy offers substantially higher-priced plans that appeal to an array of diverse consumers and with promotions to sign-up. The TXU Energy login is available to customers, along with the various ways to contact TXU Energy customer service and a few TXU Energy bill pay methods.

TXU Energy : What they're all about

TXU Energy is one of the oldest REPs operating in Texas, and their size is a testament to their ability to offer innovative plans and decent customer service. TXU Energy maintains a competitive edge on other electric providers, for example, in launching innovative products like free electricity on evenings, and a renewable energy plan backed by 100% solar energy. TXU Energy also participates in the community: TXU's Solar Academy teaches students about renewable energy, and the company even partners with schools to provide a free solar-array for educational purposes.

Budget-minded customers should take note, however, of the fact that plans offering "free" electricity might charge relatively high rates for power consumed out of the "free" hours. This forewarning on TXU Energy plan prices applies to a majority of plans offered.

Where to look for ALL TXU Energy plan charges (pre-tax) TXU Energy, like every retail electric provider in Texas, must show the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) for each plan offered. It's absolutely worth the time (and money!) to know all the charges involved with TXU Energy plan pricing, especially the TXU plan EFL cost (marked "**") for utility company pass-through charges that must be accessed by clicking on the link in the TXU Energy EFLs.

TXU Energy plans : Typical plan features and TXU Energy rate structure

TXU Energy is one of the few retail electricity providers in Texas that charges customers a base fee of $9.95/month on nearly every plan offered with the exception of the month-to-month plans. Unlike the ¢/kWh rate charge for energy consumption, a base fee is an optional charge that electric providers choose to charge customers.

Most TXU Energy electricity plans are priced at different usage rates, which vary depending on your monthly energy usage. The pricing scheme tends to benefit customers consuming over 1,200 kWh each month. For example:

kWh-usage based energy rate (with TDU: CenterPoint)
TXU plan: TXU Energy rate (¢/kWh) TXU base fee/mo.
Solar Saver 12 0-1200kWh = 10.0¢/kWh
1200-2000kWh = 5.0¢/kWh
over 2000kWh = 10.5¢/kWh
+ over 1200kWh = $30 bill credit

Overall consensus : TXU Energy reviews

As satisfied customers don't usually take the time to make their positive experiences known, TXU Energy reviews by customers tend to be mostly negative, with most negative online reviews related to billing issues.

For 2020, TXU Energy made the top 3 of the highest number of complaints filed against retail electric providers, as recorded by the Texas Public Utilities Commission on the Customer Complaint Statistics report.

Several well-known websites, including Google itself, have posted accumulated ratings (based on TXU Energy reviews by customers) of between 1 and 2 stars, out of 5. As such, it appears that if or when dissatisfaction with TXU Energy comes along - the likely billing issue (from statistics shown) could be quite potent.

Reporting a TXU Energy power outage Since TXU Energy is not a utility company, all retail electric provider customers need to report power outages to the utility company serving the area. The history of TXU Energy

TXU Energy's origins lie in the history of the electricity industry in Texas itself. The Dallas Electric Lighting Company was founded in 1882, and brought electric light to communities in northern Texas. In 1912, the Texas Power & Light Company (TP&L) consolidated 13 electric companies (including the Dallas Electric Lighting Company) into one. This company became part of the Texas Utilities Company in 1945, which served communities in the Dallas & Fort Worth areas, as well as the areas west of Abilene.

In 1993 the company expanded operations to eastern Texas with the acquisition of the Southwestern Electric Service Company (SESCO). In 1999 the company rebranded as TXU Corporation. At this time the company was the largest provider of electricity and natural gas in the state of Texas.

Deregulation of the Texas electricity industry in 2002 meant that TXU Corporation had to split its various activities into separate companies. TXU Energy started as a Texas retail electricity provider at this time. In 2007 its parent company, TXU Corporation, was bought by private equity firms KKR, TPG Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners. The company was reorganized as Energy Future Holdings Corp (EFH), with the utility company Oncor Electric Delivery as its electric distribution business, TXU Energy as its retail electricity business, and Luminant as its electric generation business.

In April, 2014, Energy Future Holdings and certain of its subsidiaries, including TXU Energy, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization. This was confirmed by the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware in December, 2015.
