Headquartered in Toronto, Just Energy is a natural gas and retail electric provider that offers residential and commercial electricity plans to consumers living in the U.K., Canada, and deregulate energy states across the US. In Texas, Just Energy competes against the other 75+ retail electric providers. Just Energy plans only come with fixed rates and with an optional renewable energy add-on for a monthly fee. Just Energy : A multinational and Texas electric provider

Along with the big and established electric providers, Just Energy began offering service to Texans when Texas deregulated the market in 2002 that created the retail energy industry.

In early 2021, Just Energy announced plans to buy Fulcrum Retail Energy - which operates under the names Amigo Energy and Tara Power / Smart Prepaid Electric in Texas. The deal is expected to be completed by October 1st, 2021, pending the closing and regulatory approval process.

Where does Just Energy serve? Dallas, Houston, Odessa, Tyler, and many more

Texans can sign-up with a Just Energy plan who reside within the deregulated retail electric service areas of the investor-owned utility companies, which include:
 Oncor Electric Delivery
 CenterPoint Energy
 AEP Texas North & Central
 Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP)

Just Energy does a great job at ensuring the Just Energy plan offering is consistent throughout the entire state. For instance, Just Energy in Dallas and Houston will have very similar plans as Just Energy in San Angelo, Abilene, Tyler, Midland and Odessa.

Just Energy offers three plans, the Empower, Rate Shield, and Just400 Advantage plan, that offer a bundled electricity rate (combined with the utility's delivery fees). However, the rest of Just Energy's plans will have the current utility company rates added on, which are:

Utility company tariffs in Texas : MARCH 30 2021
TDU TDU monthly base fee TDU ¢/kWh energy rate
AEP North $3.57/mo 3.0078¢/kWh
Oncor Electric Delivery $3.42/mo 3.4928¢/kWh
CenterPoint $4.39/mo 3.2669¢/kWh
AEP Central $4.27/mo 3.7458¢/kWh
TNMP $7.85/mo 4.0403¢/kWh

What do Texans think? : Just Energy reviews and complaints

In the past, Just Energy had an F rating with the Better Business Bureau, based on a pattern of complaints and a few cases that remain unresolved. Today, the company is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau..

Some customers have reported issues with misleading and/or aggressive sales tactics from Just Energy representatives, and others have been unsatisfied with the responsiveness of the billing and customer service departments. Just Energy has a history of lawsuits filed against it, with fines by regulators in New York and Illinois.

Over the last 6 months, Just Energy made spot #10 on the list of the most formal complaints received against retail electric providers in Texas out of the 76 REPs registered, according to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of Texas. While some customers appreciate Just Energy's rates and perks, unsatisfied customers have found a particular issue with billing services. In fact, more than 65% of all formal complaints filed with the PUC were regarding Just Energy's billing and slamming practices (the unauthorized changing of electric provider).

Just Energy's fixed rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) does not change over the whole period of the contract. Unless consolidated into one "bundled" rate (like in the Empower, Rate Shield, and Just400 Advantage plans), the utility company's rate is subject to change 2 to 3 times each year. So the "fixed" rate is fixed to a degree.

Once the fixed rate contract is finished, unless renewed or terminated, customers will automatically be switched to a variable rate on the "Default Rate Product". Fixed rate plans can often be a good idea if you are able to lock in a good rate at the right time of year.

Electricity customers should choose a fixed rate contract of at least 12 months. Electricity prices per kilowatt-hour fluctuate throughout the year, and you may actually lose money by not being able to take advantage of prices when they are low. However, because electricity prices tend to increase over time, locking in fixed rates for longer periods may prove advantageous and deliver savings.

Just Energy variable rate plan

A variable rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) may change each month. A variable can be at the discretion of the Just Energy, or they can give rules on the variability of their rate - for example, that the energy rate for customers varies alongside the wholesale price of energy.

The only variable rate plan that Just Energy uses is the Default Rate Product. Customers are automatically enrolled in the Default Rate Product when the fixed rate plan expires and no action is taken to renew on to a different plan or change to a different retail electric provider.

Although Just Energy doesn't offer one,the great thing about variable rate plans offered from electric providers, is the ability to leave the plan and/or provider at any time without having to pay an "Early Cancellation Fee". Since providers are aware of this advantage on variable rate plans, the energy price quoted in a variable rate plan is almost always higher than a commitment-involved, fixed rate plan that the same provider will offer.

Renewable plans by Just Energy : JustGreen

The Just Energy Sustainable Living Bundle plan (sponsored by powertochoose.org and terrapass™)
The Just Energy JustGreen option for all plans

The Just Energy JustGreen option offers to offset customers' carbon footprint for a monthly fee of $4.99 (50% offset) or $9.99 (100% offset). What this option essentially does is guarantees that Just Energy will purchase renewable energy certificates or attributes for the amount of energy consumed by the customer (and with respect to the percentage option enrolled).

As renewable energy continues to grow in popularity and investment, many retail electric providers already offer plans with this aspect integrated (and without an additional charge).

At this time, electric providers cannot guarantee that the energy used by each customer is renewable or green. What electric providers can ensure, though, is that the appropriate amount of renewable energy credits (RECs) is retired to authenticate the renewable energy (in kWh or % of kWh) contained in the product or plan.

Without adding the JustGreen option, Just Energy's plans only source 12.1% renewable content, which is substantially lower than the Texas average of 20.7%.

Just Energy : Early cancellation fees If deciding to become a Just Energy customer, it's worth noting the flat, "Early Termination Fee" that is attached to all fixed rate electric plans.
3-month contract : $175
4-month contract : $175
12-month contract : $175
24-month contract : $175
36-month contract : $175

"Minimum usage fee" charges with Just Energy

The Just Energy Just400 Advantage plan [if monthly usage is under 1000 kWh, $9.95 per month]

Most Just Energy plans do not have a minimum usage fee, however plans like the Just400 Advantage are not designed to reward energy conserving consumers or smaller households. Similar to big providers like Reliant, TXU, and Ambit, Just Energy uses billing credits to reward energy usage of over a certain amount (usually 1000 kWh) each month.

Any "supply" charge, outside of an energy rate, is an optional charge that providers choose to impose on to customers in a way that hinders customer attempts to save money by using less energy. Some electric providers, like TXU Energy and Reliant Energy use a minimum-usage-fee strategy in their plan pricing, but there are many other electric providers that only charge a flat energy rate, regardless of energy consumed each month or billing cycle.

As mentioned before, most of Stream Energy's plans contain a $10.95/billing cycle fee for usage that's 999kWh or less per bill. The plan that does not have this flat fee, the Stream Energy Simple and Secure plan (standard and "Plus"), instead charges a 2.5¢/kWh-higher energy rate (than the rate for over the "minimum usage") for usage below 1000 kWh per billing cycle. For example:

Base Charges with Just Energy

The Just Energy Weekends Free plan [$4.95 per month per meter]
The Just Energy Nights Free plan [$4.95 per month per meter]
The Just Energy Rate Shield plan [$4.95 per month per meter]

The above Just Energy plans have a base charge fee applied to them, regardless of contract length. The base fee / base charge is an optional charge that providers choose to impose on to customers. Some electric providers, like TXU Energy and Reliant Energy charge base fees on their plans as well, but there are many electric providers that only charge the energy rate.
