TXU Energy plans : TXU Energy Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and most cities across Texas

txu energy logo

TXU Energy offers an assortment of TXU plans that are increasingly popular across Texas, especially in major cities including Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston. The success of TXU electric can be credited to several TXU Energy attributes ranging from the iconic TXU logo, to their strategic service with landlords and property management (with renters making up 51.18% of Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston residents). There are an abundance of TXU Energy reviews on quality of service and their plans, which are offered in the 5 major ERCOT Transmission & Distribution Utility companies (TDUs). Even though TXU plans offer standard services, TXU electric prices differ depending on the utility company area (on top of the varying TDU delivery charges). Continue reading to see what TXU plans have to offer and their prices across Texas.

TXU Energy : TXU plans in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and many other cities across Texas

From all the TXU plans on the market in Texas, we are most excited about the TXU plans that include:

  • 60-day plan trial for new customers (with the option to switch to another TXU plan of an equal term)
  • Incentives to go paperless and view usage on the TXU Energy app
  • 100% renewable plans (Solar Days)
  • A "Free Nights" plan that offers a way to save on energy

TXU plans : Standard features with TXU Energy

TXU Energy is one of the few retail electricity providers in Texas that charges customers a base fee charge of $9.95/month on nearly every plan offered with the exception of month-to-month plans. Unlike the kWh rate charge for energy consumption, a base fee is an optional charge that electric providers choose to charge customers.

Most TXU electric plans are priced at different usage rates, which vary depending on your monthly energy usage.. The pricing scheme tends to benefit customers consuming over 1,200 kWh each month. For example:

kWh-usage based energy rate (with TDU: CenterPoint)
TXU plan: TXU Energy rate (¢/kWh) TXU base fee/mo. Avg bill/mo. (pre-tax)
Solar Saver 12 0-1200kWh = 10.0¢/kWh
1200-2000kWh = 5.0¢/kWh
over 2000kWh = 10.5¢/kWh
+ over 1200kWh = $30 bill credit
$9.95 $181.47

How much energy is used per square feet? Check out how Texas averages when it comes to the amount of energy needed per square feet of living space and how much it could cost you!

TXU electric plans also tend to promote energy consumption by rewarding credits! Anywhere between $30 to $60 will be automatically deducted from your bill depending on the total number of kWh used for the month. The credits generally activate when crossing over the 1201kWh and 2000kWh marks.

What to watch out for with TXU Energy plans Rates vary depending on your monthly energy usage, especially when it comes to minimum usage fees and base fees. The monthly range of kWhs you need to use in order to get the lowest energy rate must be listed in your plan's Electricity Facts Label.

TXU Energy rates are the same within each TDU service area: regardless of zip code, or if you live in a house or an apartment.

The most costly area for TXU Energy customers to live in is the Texas-New Mexico Power Co zone. The average rate for all TXU plans (including the utility company's energy rate) is 14.92¢/kWh on TNMP.

TXU Energy : Same-plan rate pricing averages per TDU (TDU energy rate included)
Utility Company: AEP Texas North Oncor CenterPoint AEP Texas Central TNMP
Average ¢/kWh per plan 13.13 13.72 14.67 14.78 14.92

TXU plans do not put each utility company's current energy rate and delivery fee directly on the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) but instead show two "**" and a link to click on to get the additional, standard costs. Check out the table below to know how much each TDU charges:

However, not all TXU plans are offered to everyone, and plan availabilty differs between the five utility service areas. From analysis of their plan offering per utility company, we have found:

  • For apartment plans, the complete results of TXU Energy plan offering appear on the TXU eLease website and not directly from the TXU.com site
  • The Texas Choice 12 (apartment) and Texas Choice 24 (house) plans quickly disappear from search results on the TXU.com site as the page loads, rendering them unavailable
  • The only TXU Energy plan that changes price depending on if you live in a house (12-month term) or in an apartment (10-month term) is the "e-Saver" plan (offered in all of Texas)
  • TXU Energy customers who reside in the Oncor and CenterPoint service areas are offered 9 plans to choose from, regardless if you live in a house or apartment
  • TXU Energy's plan offering is identical in Oncor Electric Delivery and CenterPoint service areas (but with different plan pricing)
  • TXU Energy's plan offering is identical in the AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and Texas-New Mexico Power service areas (but with different plan pricing on all three)

Now, let's look into what these TXU Energy plans are all about, who the plans are available to, and how they may appeal to customers!

Season Pass 12

Availability: All TDU service areas (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and TNMP)

The TXU Energy featured plan is a 12-month commitment and includes a "Season Pass Savings" which is defined by TXU as a 50% discount off the kWh-rated charge from Dec-Feb and June-Aug. The "Season Pass 12" plan for houses (not available for apartments) has an added "Plus A/C Care" feature in the Oncor and CenterPoint service areas.

Free Nights & Solar Days 12

Availability: All TDU service areas (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and TNMP)

100% Renewable energy For the energy consumed throughout the day (5am-7:59pm), TXU Energy buys solar power and renewable energy credits from solar farms. TXU then purchases credits for wind renewable energy equal to nighttime usage (from 8pm to 4:59am).

The famed "Free Nights" plan gives freedom to use unlimited energy during a portion of the 24-hour day by featuring a 100% discount on energy consumed (kWh-rated charge) for the 9-hour period, 8pm and 4:59am.

  • A Smart meter (AMS-enabled) is required to have this plan
  • Solar energy for daytime usage and wind energy for nighttime = 100% renewable, 100% of the time
  • Night is defined as: 8:00 p.m. to 4:59 a.m.
  • Night is free of TXU's energy charge (but not the $9.95 monthly base charge) and the TDU's delivery charges (both the monthly & kWh energy rate)

Day vs Night : How much energy do I use? Each utility company estimates that Texans consume 34.8% of total energy at night and 65.2% during the day. The Texan monthly usage of 1,174kWh would break down to approximately 765.4 daytime kWh and 408.6 nighttime kWh.

AutoSaver 12

Availability: All TDU service areas (Oncor and CenterPoint; but apartments only in AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and TNMP)

TXU Energy's AutoSaver 12, which uses 6% renewable energy, promises to save customers money when natural gas prices decrease, and protect against rate increases with a protected "price cap".

The current energy rate quoted could increase 6%-7% (0.63 to 0.71¢7kWh) depending on if the price of natural gas on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) hits TXU Energy's ceiling of $3.500/MMBtu.

Best customer for the AutoSaver planTexan's betting against the future of natural gas! This plan's energy pricing method could be quite advantageous to customers as investment increases in renewable energy (to the detriment of natural gas and its stock price).

Solar Value 12

Availability: Apartments only in all TDU service areas (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and TNMP)

TXU Energy offers the Solar Value 12 to "support solar power, even in an apartment" by using 25% renewable energy, while having fixed energy rates for two kWh-use ranges for customers for 12 months.

The plan has a slightly complicated pricing structure, one worth being aware of your monthly energy use.The pricing structure is the same across all TDUs in that:

  • a $30 credit is awarded for usage of 800kWh or more per month
  • using over 1200kWh per month gets a 40% (more or less) rate increase

Solar Saver 12

Availability: Houses only in all TDU service areas (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and TNMP)

The Solar Saver 12 aims to support Texan solar farms, by using 25% renewable energy, while "locking" in to fixed energy rates for THREE kWh-use ranges for customers during the 12 month period.

The plan has a moderately complicated pricing structure, one worth being aware of your monthly energy use.The pricing structure is the same across all TDUs in that:

  • a $30 credit is awarded for use over 1201kWh.
  • the 1201-2000 range gets a 50% (more or less) rate reduction
  • going over 2000kWh increases to a rate that's 0.5¢/kWh higher than the lowest range's rate, and

e-Saver 10 and 12

Availability: All TDU service areas (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and TNMP)

Boasted as the TXU Energy plan that saves customers cash by "doing everything online", the e-Saver plan comes in a 10-month term for apartments or a 12-month term for houses. Also, the plan only uses 6% renewable energy.

e-Saver requirement Customers may only enroll with the e-Saver plan online and are required to use the TXU Energy MyAccount paperless billing and eCorrespondence.

Flex Forward

Availability: All TDU service areas (Oncor and CenterPoint; but apartments only in AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and TNMP)

The Flex Forward is a month-to-month plan with no early-cancellation fee (which is standard on a plan with no minimum term). So how does the Flex Forward plan look:

  • month-to-month allows customers to leave when they want, no commitment
  • no games: no rate changes for pre-defined kWh ranges
  • no promotions for increased monthly consumption
  • flat rate for energy, you pay for what is used
  • energy rate is higher than other electric providers with the same type of plan
  • TXU charges a $9.95 base fee
  • only 6% renewable energy is used

Value Edge 12

Availability: Apartments only in all TDU service areas (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and TNMP)

TXU Energy states that customers on teh Value Edge 12 plan "[wi]ll get automatic bill relief when [they] use more electricity than normal". As defined by TXU, "more electricity than normal" is 800kWh per month and that "automatic bill relief" comes in the form of a $30 credit once the monthly 800kWh is reached.

The Value Edge annual plan has the standard $9.95 base fee from TXU every month and a fixed energy rate that spikes up 62-63% when consuming more than 1200kWh per month.

Best customer for the Value Edge planThe Value Edge 12 is perfect for consumers who know their monthly energy consumption exceeds 800kWh but stays below 1200kWh.

Texas Choice 24 & 12

Availability: House only (24), plan "switching" and only in the Oncor and CenterPoint service areas. Texas Choice 12 (apartments: all TDUs) and Texas Choice 24 (houses: AEP Texas Central and TNMP) appear to suffer a glitch on the TXU Energy website- the plans disappear after a couple of seconds while the page loads.

This plan boasts a loyalty reward and sourcing renewable energy by "keep[ing] Texas ... a little greener". Customers using this 25% renewable energy plan get 3% cash back every year (on a prepaid cash card) for the money spent on energy. Customers must be in good standing (in terms of billing) by the annual payout date which is towards the end of February.

The TXU Energy Texas Choice 24 targets homes (for a 24-month plan) and the Texas Choice 12 for apartments (on an annual plan). TXU's rates are the same for both termed plans but the 24-month has a doubled early-cancellation fee of $295.

The TXU Energy Choice 24 break down:

  • longest commitment TXU offers on a fixed rate plan
  • no games: no rate changes for pre-defined energy use ranges
  • increased monthly consumption is not promoted
  • final billed energy rates range from 12.23¢ - 13.79¢ per kWh

Simple Rate 12

Availability: House only and only in the Oncor and CenterPoint service areas.

TXU Energy's Simple Rate 12 plan is offered to customers in houses and not apartments, and uses 6% renewable energy. In this plan, TXU provides a fixed, flat energy rate - so the energy cost charged by TXU will be the same if you use 22kWh or 2200kWh per month (granted, a much bigger bill!) and nothing really complicated beyond that.

The pricing of the plan ranges from TDU to TDU, with the cheapest being AEP Texas North at 11.23¢/kWh and the most expensive with AEP Texas Central at 12.79¢/kWh.

Best customer for the Simple Rate 12 planThe Simple Rate 12 makes sense and is perfect for customers that don't want to have to worry about how much energy they use. If customers want to pay less, then using less energy will get a lower monthly bill.

Saver's Choice 12

Availability: House only and only in the Oncor and CenterPoint service areas.

Besides the Saver's Choice 12 plan only using 6% renewable energy, it has a very similar structure to the Solar Saver 12 plan (from above). The highlight to the Saver's Choice plan is the lowest annually fixed TXU energy rate in 1 of the 3 pre-defined kWh ranges.

TXU Energy states: "Get automatic bill relief when you need it most", but a side note is needed here. The best place to be on the Saver's Choice 12 is at the lower end of the 1201-2000 kWh/month to take advantage of the fantastic rate and the $30 credit.

Best customer for the Saver's Choice 12 planThe plan's pricing noticeably favors customers using 1201kWh to 2000kWh per month with a rate that's 50% of the base rate PLUS a $30 credit on the bill.

On Your Terms

Availability: All TDU service areas (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and TNMP) except house customers switching plans in Oncor and Centerpoint areas.

The month-to-month, On Your Terms plan gives customers a 12-month fixed rate which remains flat across any monthly usage (so no predetermined ranges with differing rates in this plan). Customers using 800kWh or more per billing cycle are rewarded with a $15 credit on their bill.

No minimum term, high energy priceThe freedom to cancel at any time (and getting the $15 credit for 800kWh) comes at a steep price, with a final energy rate between 13.13¢/kWh (AEP Texas North) to 14.49¢/kWh (AEP Texas Central).

SuperSecure 12

Availability: All TDU service areas (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas North, AEP Texas Central, and TNMP) except to "house" customers in Oncor and Centerpoint areas

Like the On Your Terms plan (above), the SuperSecure 12 is only offered to customers residing in apartments. This plan is unique in that it provides an all-inclusive rate-based plan to customers. The rate appears excessive BUT this is the only cost associated with the plan (assuming there is no early cancellation and payments are made on-time).

The quoted rate on this plan includes the costs of:

  • the TDU monthly fee (depending on which TDU: $3.42 to $7.85)
  • the TDU energy tariff (again, depending on which TDU: 3.53¢/kWh to 4.909¢/kWh)
  • TXU Energy's standard base fee charge, which is generally $9.95/mo.

Finally! A fixed fixed-rate plan! The SuperSecure promises that the rate will not change (up nor down) for any reason at all. This is the most fixed rate plan that any provider could offer since the price includes (and "fixes") all TDU costs as well.
