New customers : Deep East Texas Electric Coop

The new customer service sign up process with DETEC is quite straightforward. The ordered information that is needed to start service at a property on DETEC's existing records, is:

  1. A completed, signed, and submitted (by Fax or in person) Application form
  2. The 5 or 6 digit meter number: 5-digit meter numbers are on a silver strip, while 6-digit meter numbers (followed by DETEC) are printed directly on the meter
  3. SSN and Driver's License number: for a soft credit check (for identity and deposit purposes)
  4. Deposit payment**: DETEC determines the deposit as "double the monthly average bill"
  5. One-time fees: $45 in total (this includes a refundable $10 Membership fee, and a non-refundable $35 Connect fee)

**Eligible customers may have the deposit waived if one of the following criteria is met:

  • Current DETEC customer, in "good standing" - last 12 months of on-time payements (2 exceptions allowed), never disconnected from service, and are current in payment
  • Letter of Credit - a statement saying the same (above) from the previous electric provider used
  • Letter of Guarantee - from a current and "good standing" DETEC customer to secure payment of electricity bills
  • Customers over 65 years old - proof of age and no balance owed to a previous electric provider used over the last two years

Moving from a local coop service area to another part of Texas? A majority of Texas residents live in deregulated electric zones where the competition between +70 electric providers enables the power to choose from electricity plans that offer 100% renewable energy, rate type options, or even free energy nights or weekends!
