In 2009, Frontier Utilities added Sol Energy and Rodeo Energy to their "doing-business-as" names list, however neither are currently operating as electric providing entities.

Frontier Utilities plans with fixed rates do not change over the contract term, however the utility company's rate is subject to change, and does so 2 to 3 times each year. So the "fixed" rate is fixed to a degree.
Fixed rate plans can often be a good idea if you are able to land a good rate at the right time of year. Once the fixed rate contract is finished, unless renewed or terminated, customers will automatically be switched to a variable rate on the "Default Rate Product"- a typical practice with any provider.
Electricity customers should choose a fixed rate contract of at least 12 months (the only term that Frontier Utilities offers through their website). Electricity prices per kilowatt-hour change throughout the year, and you may actually miss out on pricing when energy rates are low. However, because electricity prices tend to increase over time, locking in fixed rates for longer periods may prove to be money-saving.
Frontier Utilities : Early cancellation fees If deciding to become a Frontier Utilities customer, it's worth taking into consideration the flat, "Early Termination Fee" that is attached to all fixed rate electric plans.
To get out of a 12-month contract : $150, regardless of how much time is left in the term.
Variable rates on Frontier Utilities plans
The Frontier Utilities Freedom MTM plan
A variable rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) will more than likely change each month. A variable can be at the discretion of Frontier Utilities, or they can give rules on the rate's variability - for example, the energy rate for customers changes alongside the wholesale price of energy.
The only other variable rate plan that Frontier Utilities has is their Default Product (for when a fixed-rate plan ends and no action is taken by the customer to change to a different plan or provider).
The advantage of opting for a variable rate plan is the ability to leave the plan and/or provider at any time without having to pay an "Early Cancellation Fee". Since providers are aware of this advantage on variable rate plans, the energy price given in a variable rate plan is almost always higher than any fixed rate plan that the same provider will offer.
Renewable energy : Frontier Utilities plans
Frontier Utilities renewable energy plans are currently not available
Frontier Utilities does not offer a plan to fully support the renewable energy market. Usually, electric providers offer (at least) the option to choose a plan to fund the green energy industry by using billed funds to purchase renewable energy certificates.
The energy plans offered by Frontier Utilities only source 17.1% renewable content (with their variable rate plan only at 6%), which is substantially below the Texas average of 21%.
Frontier Utilities plans : Minimum usage fees & Billing credits
Frontier Utilities, technically, does not offer plans containing minimum usage fees
The Frontier Utilities Frontier Max 12 plan
$100 credit per billing period if billed usage is 2000-2500 kWh
The Frontier Utilities Beat the Heat 12 plan
$75 credit per billing period if billed usage is 1000-1500 kWh
The Frontier Utilities Straight Power 12 plan
$69 credit per billing period if billed usage is less than 500 kWh
The Frontier Utilities Stay Cozy 12 plan
$40 credit per billing period if billed usage is 1900-2400 kWh
Although all Frontier Utilities plans do not contain a minimum usage fee (usually used to discourage energy conservation), many plans include a "billing credit" to encourage energy consumption. Generally, plans that have a minimum usage fee or billing credit tend to not favor energy-conserving consumers or smaller households.
Besides the standard energy rate, any other "supply fee" (what electric providers charge their customers) is optionally imposed on customers. Many providers choose to charge customers these frivolous fees so as to discourage trying to save money by using less energy.
Base Charges with Frontier Utilities
The Frontier Utilities Frontier Max 12 plan

The Frontier Utilities Beat the Heat 12 plan
$7.95 per billing period
The Frontier Utilities Straight Power 12 plan
$168 per billing period
The Frontier Utilities Easy Bill 12 plan
$7.95 per billing period
The Frontier Utilities Stay Cozy 12 plan
$89 per billing period
The Frontier Utilities Freedom MTM plan
$9.95 per billing period
Most plans currently offered by Frontier Utilities contain a base charge fee. The base fee / base charge is another optional charge that providers often choose to impose on to customers. Some electric providers, like TXU Energy and Reliant Energy, charge base fees on their plans, but there are many electric providers like Frontier Utilities that opt out of implementing the charge.

What do Texans think? : Frontier Utilities reviews Dallas, Houston, and more
According to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of Texas, over the last 6 months, Frontier Utilities was #16 on the list of the most formal complaints received against retail electric providers in Texas out of the 70+ registered REPs. While most customers value Frontier's competitive rates and easy-to-understand electric plans, unsatisfied customers have found a particular issue with billing services. In fact, 55% of all formal complaints filed with the PUC target billing practices by Frontier Utilities.
