Plan Types In-Depth

Fixed Rate Rlans

With a fixed rate plan, the price you pay for your electricity (in ¢/kWh) stays the same throughout the whole period of the contract. Customers on a fixed contract should, however, keep track of when their contract ends, as many retail electric providers will automatically switch them to a variable rate once the contract is finished. Some customers have reported that they appreciate savings on fixed rate electricity plans with Frontier Utilities, particularly those who were able to lock in a good rate at the right time of year. As electricity prices per kilowatt-hour fluctuate throughout the year, depending on the time of year you may actually lose money by not being able to take advantage of prices when they are low (this is where time of year becomes a factor in how good of a deal you can get with a fixed price plan). However, because electricity prices tend to increase over time, locking in fixed rates for longer periods may prove advantageous and deliver savings. This is why in general we recommend that customers choose fixed rate contracts of at least one year.

Prepaid Plans

Prepaid plans offer you the option of "pay as you go" with your electricity. While there are no credit requirements or security deposits associated with this type of plan, over the long run the rates tend to be more expensive than other options. Many customer complaints about Frontier Utilities are related to prepaid plans. Interested customers need to keep track of their usage and account balance, as disconnection procedures can be quicker with prepaid plans than with other plan types.

Base Charges

Frontier Utilities green energy options include a $5.95 base charge. While other plans do not include a base charge, many fixed price contracts have a minimum usage fee of $8.00 for consumption below 2000 kWh. Prepaid customers are charged a $0.39 - $0.45 daily fee.

Green Energy Plans

Frontier Utilities offers a fixed rate green energy rate at 12 months, and a variable (month-to-month) green energy option. These plans promise electricity from renewable sources (100% of the energy mix is renewable). Customer Reviews

We rate Frontier Utilities direct-energy-rating for customer experience. Many customer complaints are related to problems related to prepaid plans, though some customers also reported negative experiences with customer service. On the other hand, many customers appreciate Frontier Utilities's straightforward, no-nonsense approach. Frontier Utilities is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and won an Award of Distinction in the Energy Services category in 2014 and 2015 (equivalent to a "Best in Class" award among BBB-accredited businesses).
