Our Take On Xoom Energy
Based on our analysis of this company and the customer feedback we have detected from various sources, we have given Xoom Energy:
Xoom Energy is currently a defendant in a class action lawsuit alleging fraudulent and deceptive sales practices by offering a low promotional variable rate, and then charging far higher rates in subsequent months. Because of this ongoing lawsuit and the allegations leveled against the company, we do not currently recommend Xoom Energy. Compare reviews with other suppliers.
|Plan type||Contract Length||Details||Early termination fee||Our Thoughts|
|Fixed rate plans||6, 12, 24 months||
|From $110 - $450||
Not recommended: Very high early termination fees, below average renewable content, high base charges
The advertised tarif will only apply for the first month, and is subject to change based on the discretion of the provider.
|None||Not Recommended: Variable rate plans are not good deals if pricing is at the provider's discretion, and could result in much higher than expected energy bills.|
|"SimpleClean"||12 month fixed rate||
||$225||Not Recommended: Not a full 100% green energy plan.|
Description of Plan Types
Fixed rate plans
A fixed rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) does not change over the whole period of the contract. Once the contract is finished, unless you renew it or terminate it, it will automatically switch to a variable rate. For more information about what a fixed rate is: /energy-markets/fixed-rate-energy-offers
Fixed rate plans can often be a good deal if you are able to lock in a good rate at the right time of year.
Electricity customers should opt for fixed rate contracts of at least 12 months. Electricity prices per kilowatt-hour fluctuate throughout the year, and you may actually lose money by not being able to take advantage of prices when they are low. However, because electricity prices tend to increase over time, locking in fixed rates for longer periods may prove advantageous and deliver savings.
Variable rate plans
A variable rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) varies each month. A variable can be at the discretion of the supplier, or the supplier can give rules on the variability of their rate. For more information about what a variable rate is: /energy-markets/variable-rate-plans-for-electricity-and-gas
With/without Base Charges
Plans from Xoom energy have a base charge applied to them which varies according to contract length.
Green Energy Plans
Xoom Energy does not offer 100% green energy plans, with the highest percentage of renewable energy available in a plan at 50%. The 6% renewable content included in their plans is below the state average of 10.7%.*
Xoom Energy has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, based on the number of complaints that have been made against it relative to its size. However, Xoom Energy is the subject of large numbers of negative consumer reviews on the internet, and is currently a defendant in a class action lawsuit alleging fraudulent and deceptive sales practices. Some customers have been dissatisfied with the responsiveness of the billing and customer service departments.
