Available Plans

Plan type Contract Length Features Early termination fee Our Thoughts
Residential fixed rate - Price Protect 6, 12
  • Minimum usage charge of $8.99 when usage is below 1000 kWh/month
  • Slightly lower price than "Sure Saver" plans, but no service fee credit
  • 0% renewable content
  • Moderate early termination fees
  • Clear T&Cs, which means less confusion for you as a customer
  • Better for high usage customers, given the minimum usage fee
Residential fixed rate - Sure Saver 3, 6, 12
  • Slightly higher price per kWh
  • No minimum usage fee
  • $60 monthly credit when usage is above 999 kWh
  • 0% renewable content
  • This plan seems better suited to users who alternate between usage under and above 1000 kWh/month, since lower consumption months will not incur a fee, while higher consumption months will earn a credit to be applied to future bills.
Residential fixed rate - Green Price Protect 12, 24
  • 100% green energy
  • We recommend the 24 month plan, which has the same early termination fee as the 12 month plan, and allows you to lock in low rates for two years.

Description of the Plan Types

Fixed Rate Plans

A fixed rate is a rate whose price (in ¢/kWh) does not change over the whole period of the contract. However, consumers should be aware that many energy retailers will automatically transfer their customers to a variable rate once their fixed rate contract has finished. Find out more about what a fixed rate is.

Customers report that they appreciate savings on fixed rate electricity plans from Spark Energy. Fixed rate plans can often be a good deal if you are able to lock in a good rate at the right time of year.

Electricity customers should opt for fixed rate contracts of longer periods of time (6 months or more). Electricity prices per kilowatt-hour fluctuate throughout the year, and you may actually lose money by not being able to take advantage of prices when they are low. However, because electricity prices tend to increase over time, locking in fixed rates for longer periods may prove advantageous and deliver savings.

Variable Rate Plans

A variable rate is a rate (in ¢/kWh) that changes every month. How the rate changes can be at the discretion of the supplier, or it might be based on a specific mathematical formula and/or based on an energy index. We recommend this rate if you are planning on moving out in less than 6 months. Spark Energy does not offer variable rate plans in Texas, but if you are considering one from another provider, please consult our page on variable rates.

Base Charges

Some plans with Spark Energy apply a minimum usage charge. Therefore, the total price per kWh may be higher than advertised, depending on your consumption. The price will change if you consume less than or more than 1000 kWh/month. If you do not know your monthly energy consumption, please use our Estimation Tool.

Green Energy Plans

Spark Energy does offer 100% green energy plans, but offers 0% renewable content in their standard electricity mix. This is well below the Texas average of 10.7%.

Customer Reviews

We have rated this supplier .

Spark Energy has not been accredited with the Better Business Bureau, but because it is a large company, we feel confident rating them four stars based on a review of online feedback. Customers appreciate the straightforward rates and T&Cs. They do not have a broad range of offers, but they are clearly displayed on the website. They are transparent in their T&C, but there still are a few complaints. Some customers have been dissatisfied with the billing and customer service departments in particular.

In addition, there is no renewable energy as a part of their standard mix, but they do offer 100% green rates for customers who desire that option.
