Austin Energy Austin, TX : About & Contact

Regulated and publicly owned, Austin Energy provides electricity (almost exclusively) for Travis County, balancing 50% of their production in the City of Austin and the other 50% outside Austin city limits (which includes a small portion to neighboring counties: Williamson and Hays). Specifically, these locations include:

All areas inside Austin city limits  City of Sunset Valley (78745) Del Valle (78617)
The City of Bee Cave (78738) Village of Creedmoor (78610) Manor (78653)
Village of the Hills (78738) City of Mustang Ridge (78601 and 78747) Pflugerville (78660, 78664, and 78691)
City of Rollingwood (78746) Manchaca (78652 and 78748) Cedar Park (78613 and 78630)
City of Westlake Hills (78746) Buda (78610) City of Lakeway (78738 and 78734)

For households and businesses located within Travis county that are deregulated, namely areas with the following zip codes: 78653, 78660, 78727, 78728, 78750, 78758, and 78759 - then options begin to open up! But first, some small details on electric utility companies.

Although the previously listed areas are argueably close, different electric Transmission & Distribution Utility (TDU) companies may be present but never compete in the same area. This may inevitably lead to varying base-cost differences on electric bills between zip codes depending on which TDU oversees the Retail Electric Providers (REPs) establishing service with customers residing in the area.

For the Austin area & Travis County zip codes that are currently deregulated, the TDU feeding electricity to meters in each is more than likely Oncor Electric Delivery.

Moving to the Austin area and need to setup electricity service?

In this area there are more than one distributor, so the first step in starting electricity service for your new home is to find which utility company serves your address. Start by calling Austin Energy or Oncor Electric Delivery, their customer service numbers are listed below to find out whether they provide service to your address. If they don't, call another utility until you find the utility that serves your home.

  • Austin Energy´s customer service: 512-494-9400 or from outside Austin (toll-free) 888-340-6465
  • Oncor Electric Delivery's customer service: 888-313-6862
  • Texas New Mexico Power's customer service: 888-866-7456
  • AEP Texas North's customer service: 877-373-4858

If you have found that your utility company is Oncor Electric Delivery, the only other step is to decide which Retail Energy Provider (REP) to go with! Once decided, starting service is pretty straightforward. To open an account in your name you will simply need to call your favorite REP and provide:

  • Your exact address (including your street address, unit number, city/town, and zip code)
  • Your full name and contact information (phone number, email, address)
  • The date you require service (in other words, the date you move in)

Many REPs require a security deposit to activate accounts for new customers, so you may also be asked for your Social Security Number (SSN) in order for the provider to perform a credit check.

Customer Service and Power Outage Response

Your local electric utility is responsible for responding to power outage or electricity-related emergency. In case of a power interruption, call its emergency number. Also in case you witness a dangerous situation involving power lines (a tree branch too close to a electric line). In most cases, for all other concerns, including questions about your bill, payment, or any other issue, call their customer service number.
