What it means to live in a Municipal Light Plant town

Massachusetts has 41 Municipal Light Plants. Danvers is one of them. Here is the practical difference compared with an Eversource or National Grid town.

Investor-owned utility (Eversource, National Grid)

  • ·Regulated by the MA DPU.
  • ·You can shop a competitive supplier for the supply half of the bill.
  • ·Supply changes every 6 months via Basic Service auction.
  • ·Higher rates on average than MLPs.

Municipal Light Plant (Danvers)

  • ·Regulated by its local commission and town meeting.
  • ·One bill from the utility for delivery and supply combined.
  • ·Rates change less often, usually once a year.
  • ·MLP rates are typically 20 to 35 percent below the IOU equivalent.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pick a competitive supplier in Danvers?
No. MA's retail choice law (chapter 164, 1997) applies only to investor-owned utility territories. Municipal Light Plant towns are excluded. Danvers Electric supplies all the power its customers use.
Why are MLP rates usually cheaper?
Three reasons. They are non-profit, so they do not pay shareholders. They have lower overhead, with no marketing, no shareholder reporting, and small staff. Many also own legacy generation contracts at fixed prices set decades ago.
Who do I call for a downed power line?
Danvers Electric, not Eversource, even though Eversource serves neighboring towns. Call (978) 774-0005 ext. 3 day or night. If lives are at risk, call 911 first.
