About Liberty Utilities in New Hampshire

Liberty Utilities is the New England operating brand of the former Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. In NH, the company runs two regulated businesses: EnergyNorth Natural Gas (about 96,000 gas customers across the Manchester-Nashua-Concord corridor and the Seacoast) and Granite State Electric (about 45,000 electric customers concentrated in the Salem-area towns of Atkinson, Derry, Hampstead, Pelham, Plaistow, Salem, Windham, plus pockets near Charlestown and Lebanon).

As an investor-owned utility, Liberty earns a regulated return on its rate base set by the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission. Bills carry a fixed monthly customer charge, per-kWh delivery and supply lines, the System Benefits Charge, and a handful of small adders.

The Tilton service center at 30 Tilton Road supports the Lakes Region, Tilton, Northfield, Sanbornton, Belmont, Laconia, Gilford, Meredith, Center Harbor and Moultonborough. It is a dispatch facility: drop-in customers should use the Concord or Lebanon walk-in centers, or call the toll-free line.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tilton office a walk-in payment center?
No. 30 Tilton Road is an operations and dispatch facility, not a customer counter. For in-person service or cash payments, use the Concord (116 N Main St) or Lebanon (407 Miracle Mile) walk-in centers, or pay via an authorized Western Union or CheckFreePay agent.
What do I do if I smell gas?
Leave the building immediately. Do not flip switches, light matches or use a phone inside. Once safely outside, call Liberty's 24/7 emergency line at 1-855-327-7758 or 911 if there is fire or injury.
Can I shop for a cheaper supplier on Liberty's wires?
Yes. New Hampshire has had retail electric choice since 1996 and most gas customers can also shop. Liberty handles delivery either way; you can stay on Liberty's default service, join a municipal Community Power program if your town runs one, or pick a competitive supplier.
Who do I call for a downed power line?
Call Liberty 24/7 at 1-800-833-4200. If a wire is on the ground or someone is hurt, dial 911 first. Never approach a downed line; assume it is energized.
Does Liberty deliver electricity in Tilton, or only gas?
Both, but with caveats. Liberty's gas footprint covers the broader Lakes Region. Its electric footprint in NH is concentrated in the Salem area and a few Upper Valley towns; in most of the Tilton/Laconia area the electricity is delivered by Eversource (PSNH), not Liberty.
Is help available if I cannot pay my bill?
Yes. NH residents may qualify for LIHEAP fuel assistance, the Electric Assistance Program (8 to 76% bill discount) and the Neighbor Helping Neighbor emergency fund. Apply through your local Community Action Agency before a shut-off notice arrives.
