About Duke Energy Ohio

Duke Energy Ohio is the Ohio regulated subsidiary of Duke Energy Corp. (NYSE: DUK), the largest investor-owned electric utility holding company in the United States by customer count. Duke Energy Ohio traces back to the Cincinnati Gas & Electric Company founded in 1837, which became part of Cinergy in 1994 and was acquired by Duke Energy in 2006.

Duke Energy Ohio is responsible for the poles, wires, substations, gas mains and meters that bring electricity and natural gas to homes and businesses across southwest Ohio. The corporate parent is headquartered at 550 South Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC 28202, but Duke Energy's regional offices and operations remain in Cincinnati.

Duke Energy Ohio's delivery rates are set by the PUCO. Its wholesale operations sit inside the PJM Interconnection footprint and are also overseen by FERC.

How your Duke Energy Ohio bill is built

Every Ohio electric bill splits in two. Duke Energy is always the delivery company in southwest Ohio. You choose who handles the supply half.

Supply (shoppable)

  • ·The price of the kWh you actually use.
  • ·Standard Service Offer from Duke Energy if you do nothing, set by PUCO-approved auctions.
  • ·A CRES supplier certified by the PUCO if you shop on energychoice.ohio.gov.
  • ·Switching never changes the wires, the meter, or who you call for an outage.

Delivery (not shoppable)

  • ·The cost of moving energy through Duke Energy's wires and mains.
  • ·Customer charge, a flat monthly fee paid even at zero usage.
  • ·Distribution + transmission per-kWh charges.
  • ·Riders for grid modernization, energy efficiency and storm recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Is Duke Energy Ohio the same as Duke Energy Carolinas?
Same parent, different regulated subsidiary. Duke Energy Ohio, Inc. is the PUCO-regulated utility for southwest Ohio. Duke Energy Carolinas LLC and Duke Energy Progress LLC are the regulated utilities for the Carolinas. Each files separate rate cases with its own state regulator, even though they all roll up to Duke Energy Corp.
Can I pick a different electric supplier in Duke territory?
Yes. Ohio has had retail electric choice since 1999. Duke Energy still delivers the power and sends the bill, but you can pick any of the 70+ PUCO-certified CRES suppliers for the generation portion. Always compare an offer to the current 10.08¢ Price to Compare before signing.
Who do I call for a downed power line?
Duke Energy's 24/7 outage line at 1-800-543-5599, or text OUT to 57801 once you have texted REG to sign up. If a wire is on the ground or anyone is hurt, call 911 first, then Duke Energy.
What do I do if I smell gas?
Leave the building first. Do not flip switches, light matches or use a phone inside. Once outside, call the 24/7 gas emergency line at 1-800-634-4300 or 911 from a safe distance.
How often does the SSO Price to Compare change?
Duke Energy Ohio's SSO resets each May (and on a rolling auction schedule before then) through PUCO-approved competitive auctions. The current rate of 10.08¢/kWh applies as of May 2026. Always check the live number on PUCO's Apples to Apples tool before signing a CRES contract.
Does Duke Energy still operate the Cincinnati Gas & Electric system?
Yes. Cincinnati Gas & Electric (CG&E) was the predecessor company, renamed Cinergy in 1994 and acquired by Duke Energy in 2006. The infrastructure, service territory and many of the substations are the same physical system, now operating under the Duke Energy Ohio name.
