Before you go
What a Rhode Island Energy site actually handles
Most RI Energy addresses are field-operations depots, not customer counters. Knowing the difference saves a wasted drive.
What an authorised pay agent can do
- ✓ Accept cash payments at an authorised walk-in pay agent (CVS, Walmart, certain credit unions). RI Energy lists every agent on rienergy.com;
- ✓ Issue a same-day stamped receipt if you need proof of payment to lift a disconnect notice;
- ✓ Set up a budget billing plan by phone at 1-855-743-1101, with the agreement mailed to you in two to three business days;
- ✓ Open or close an account with your name, address, Social Security number and the move-in or move-out date by phone or at rienergy.com;
- ✓ Apply for the low-income discount (LIHEAP-linked rate) and submit supporting documents online or by mail.
What a field depot is not for
- ✗ Reporting a power outage. Call 1-855-743-1102, 24/7. Crews are dispatched from depots like Exeter, but the local depot phone is not staffed for outage calls;
- ✗ Reporting a gas leak. Leave the building first, then call 1-800-640-1595 from outside;
- ✗ Walking in to pay a bill. Most addresses are field depots without a counter. Use an authorised pay agent, online, by phone or by mail instead;
- ✗ Comparing competitive supplier offers. RI Energy is the delivery utility. Supplier shopping happens on our supplier directory or on EnergyShop.RI.gov;
- ✗ Scheduling a meter install or move. Field crews are dispatched by phone, not from the counter.

Insider tip
Same wires, same crews, new name on the bill
The legal entity is still The Narragansett Electric Company, but the customer-facing brand is now Rhode Island Energy. The wires, the poles, the meters and the field crews are physically the same; only the logos on the trucks and the colour scheme on the bill have changed. Some older offices and depots still carry National Grid signage during the transition.
Walking into an RI Energy depot to ask about cheaper supply will not get you far, the field staff is trained on delivery and storm work, not on the competitive market. For supplier shopping, see our RI supplier directory or the state-run EnergyShop.RI.gov portal.
Quick answers
Before you make the trip, the most common questions about RI Energy offices.
Almost certainly no. Start service, stop service, set up auto-pay, request a payment plan and change your mailing address can all be done by phone at 1-855-743-1101 or online at rienergy.com. Cash payments go through authorised walk-in pay agents (CVS, Walmart, select credit unions), which RI Energy lists on its website by ZIP code.
Field depots like the Exeter site keep weekday business hours, typically Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. or 8 a.m. to around 4 p.m. ET, closed on weekends and federal holidays. They are not customer counters, so calling ahead is essential before driving over.
No. Call the 24/7 outage line at 1-855-743-1102 or report online at rienergy.com. Crews dispatch out of depots like Exeter, but the local depot phone is not staffed for outage calls. If you see a downed wire, fire or anyone injured, call 911 first.
Leave the building immediately. Do not flip light switches, do not start your car nearby, do not call from inside. Once outside, call the 24/7 gas emergency line at 1-800-640-1595. RI Energy will dispatch a technician at no charge.
Yes. Rhode Island has had retail choice since 1997. You can stay on Rhode Island Energy Last Resort Service (the default supply rate), or pick a licensed competitive supplier directly. The delivery half of your bill stays with RI Energy no matter what. Compare every offer to the current LRS rate at ripuc.ri.gov before signing.
Call your competitive supplier first to cancel (watch for any termination fee on a fixed-rate contract), then call Rhode Island Energy at 1-855-743-1101 to confirm the return to LRS. There is no fee to switch back, and it takes one to two billing cycles.
