However, Brilliant Energy's offers are fairly limited compared to many of its competitors, and many customer complaints are centered around billing problems. Brilliant Energy has the potential to be a good choice of provider, with the right plan. Their prices also appear to be quite competitive compared to many other Texas REPs, and they offer quite a wide range of contract options. However, as they charge a $10.99 minimum usage fee, for consumption under 1,000 kWh/month, we don't recommend Brilliant Energy for smaller consumers.

They are a BBB-accredited business, which means that they have met BBB accreditation standards, have paid a fee to the BBB, and have signed a BBB charter promising to abide by certain standards. Brilliant Energy's score is based on the few complaints filed for the age of the company and Brilliant Energy's responsiveness to complaints.

Additional Fees

Here are some of the non-recurring charges that Brilliant Energy may charge customers depending on the situation

  • $10.99 minimum usage fee for consumption under 1,000 kWh/month
  • Up to $400 security deposit
  • $200 contract cancellation fee
  • $30 insufficient funds fee (for all failed payments - e.g. bounced checks, etc)
  • $10 disconnection notice fee for every disconnection notice sent to the customer
  • $75 disconnection/reconnection fee - charged if Brilliant Energy sends a notice to the customer's utility to disconnect the customer's service 
  • $10 to pay bills over the phone

Customer Service

As is the case with all retail electric providers, customer reviews of Brilliant Energy are mixed. Dissatisfaction and poor reviews are usually a result of additional charges applied to the customer's bills, and/or dissatisfaction with customer service. That being said, other customers have reported positive experiences with customer service, and have appreciated low prices for their power.
