Gulf Electricity
Please note that as of summer 2015, Gulf Electricity no longer serves electricity supply customers. Gulf’s electricity supply service in CT, MA, ME and NY was transferred to Think Energy
A subsidiary of the well-known Gulf Oil company, Gulf Electricity serves about 400,000 residential customers across six states, with fixed rate and green energy options.
Electricity Service
Gulf Electricity serves electricity customers in the following states:
- Connecticut
- Maine
- Massachusetts
- New Hampshire
- New York
- New York City
- Westchester county
- Rhode Island
You will still receive only one bill from your local utility company after switching to Gulf Electricity.
Rates with Gulf Electricity
Gulf Electricity only offers fixed electricity rates. Though our recommendations vary based on contract length, these offers are the best deal with alternative suppliers. Because variable rates are normally not regulated by your state government, they are subject to fluctuate above what your local utility offers. For alternative suppliers, if you are able to lock in 18 months or more for your fixed rate electricity plan, you will potentially be able to save money over the long term as the market price of electricity rises.
Fixed rate terms with Gulf Electricity include:
- 6 months
- 11 months
- 12 months
- 18 months
- 24 months
Contract lengths vary based on your location and local utility.
Ending your Contract
There may be an early termination charge, depending on your location and the amount of time left on your contract. Fees range from $0-200. You must notify Gulf Electricity 30 days in advance before your intended end date. Otherwise, at the end of your normal contract term with Gulf Electricity, you will be automatically switched back to your local utility's standard plan.
Customer Reviews
Customers report satisfaction with fixed rate energy plans, where savings can be considerable. Consumers also appreciate the availability of green energy options.
However, some aspects of service with Gulf Electricity are less appreciated. Some consumers have expressed frustration with Gulf Electricity billing and online bill payment systems, which can be unclear and not user-friendly.

Green Electricity
There are green options for Gulf Electricity customers in the following states:
- Maine
- New Hampshire
Electricity on green plans comes form 100% renewable sources. This means that green electricity generation does not harm the environment, and does not deplete natural resources. Gulf Electricity purchases Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from local sources and delivers renewable energy directly to customers' homes.
In Maine, Gulf's green energy comes from biomass, where waste is converted into energy. Other sources of renewable energy in Maine may include solar, wind, or hydro power.
New Hampshire's green energy generation sources include local hydro power.
Rewards
Gulf Electricity offers "Power Points" for shopping purchases made by customers, which they can use to pay their electricity bill or to pay for Gulf brand gasoline. Customers just need to enroll qualifying credit or store cards online with Gulf Electricity to start earning points.
Business Offers
Gulf Electricity also serves businesses in the above states. Rates are divided up based on whether a company is a small usage (less than 20,000 kWh per month) or large usage (more than 20,000 kWh per month) business. Early termination fees are equal to the business customers' highest monthly usage during the past 12 months, multiplied by the fixed electricity rate.
There are green energy options as well for businesses in Maine and New Hampshire.
Company History
Gulf Oil is well known as a gasoline company, which was established in 1901. After energy deregulation in the 1990s, Gulf expanded to serve customers as an alternative electricity supply company. It is currently headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts, and serves nearly 400,000 electricity customers.
