Why a GLE bill is not a Consumers Energy bill

In northern Lower Michigan, you are typically a GLE member or a Consumers Energy customer, depending on the township. The rules and governance are very different.

Consumers Energy / DTE (IOU)

  • ·Owned by shareholders.
  • ·Regulated by the MPSC; rate cases every 12 to 18 months.
  • ·10 percent of load eligible for retail choice (always full).
  • ·Outage line is statewide.

GLE (cooperative)

  • ·Owned by the members it serves.
  • ·Governed by an elected member board.
  • ·No retail choice; co-op supplies and delivers the power.
  • ·Margins above cost are credited to your capital credits account and refunded over time.

Insider tip

GLE built fiber where private ISPs would not

Rural northern Michigan was largely passed over by cable companies after the 2010s deregulation push. GLE's board approved Truestream, a fiber-to-the-home broadband subsidiary, in 2017, financed in part by federal RDOF and ReConnect grants and in part by member equity (capital credits). Today Truestream offers 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps symmetric plans across most of the co-op's territory.

What that means for you: If you are a GLE member, your electric kWh and your broadband-build dollars share the same poles and the same cooperative. Sign up for Truestream when it reaches your road and you reinforce the same capital-credit pool that funds your eventual refund. Check current availability at jointruestream.com.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pick a competitive supplier as a GLE member?
No. Michigan's limited retail choice (10 percent cap) applies only to investor-owned utilities. Co-ops are excluded by statute. GLE supplies all the power and delivers it on its own lines.
Where does GLE buy its power?
GLE buys nearly all of its energy through Wolverine Power Cooperative, the generation-and-transmission co-op that supplies most Michigan electric co-ops from a mix of natural gas, wind, and market purchases on MISO.
My power is out. Who do I call?
GLE, never Consumers Energy. Call 1-888-485-2537 day or night, or use the SmartHub app. GLE crews dispatch from local service centers across the 26 counties.
