Insider tip
A nuclear plant on your beach changes the cost structure
The Cook Nuclear Plant (two reactors, ~2,160 MW combined) sits on the Lake Michigan shore near Bridgman and produces baseload power at one of the lowest variable costs on the PJM grid. Cook's NRC operating licenses were extended in 2005 to 2034 and 2037 respectively, and AEP is studying a second extension to the 80-year mark.
What that means for you: I&M's residential supply mix is heavily nuclear, which insulates Michigan customers from the natural-gas price swings that hit DTE and Consumers Energy. When PJM capacity prices spike (as they did in the 2026 auction), I&M typically passes through a smaller fuel-clause adjustment than its eastern-MI peers. The trade-off is concentration risk: a single Cook outage moves the I&M bill more than it would on a more diversified portfolio.
