Insider tip

A co-op propane line is not the same as natural gas

Despite the name Electric & Gas, PIE&G does not run buried natural-gas mains. Its Gas division delivers liquefied propane by truck into tanks on member properties. Onaway and the northeast Lower Peninsula are too sparse for natural-gas pipelines to make economic sense, so propane fills the gap.

What that means for you: Propane prices move with crude oil markets, not the Henry Hub natural-gas index. If you watch news about a cold snap in the Plains driving natural-gas prices up, your PIE&G propane bill may move very differently. Lock in summer-fill pricing in July or August for the next heating season; PIE&G publishes its summer-fill window each year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pick a competitive supplier as a PIE&G member?
No. Co-ops are exempt from Michigan's 10 percent retail-choice law. PIE&G supplies all the electricity. Propane, by contrast, is fully competitive: you can buy from any propane provider in your area.
Which counties does PIE&G electric serve?
Presque Isle, Cheboygan, Montmorency, Alpena, Otsego, Alcona, Oscoda, and Crawford counties (parts of each). The propane delivery footprint is much larger, covering most of Michigan and northern Indiana.
My power is out. Who do I call?
PIE&G at 1-800-423-6634, day or night. If a power line is down, call 911 first. Do not call Consumers Energy for a PIE&G outage.
