The point of this article is for you to understand the different service options which exist with Central Hudson. In many cases it is not your choice to choose the service as it will depend on your home configuration, but this information is still here for your information.

Summary

Service Classification & Rate

There are different Service Classifications (S.C. 1, 2, 3, etc.). Within each S.C., there are different rates (E110, E120, etc.).

Service Classification

Only the residential SC's have been included here (there are also commercial, industrial, and street lamp and traffic light SC's). There is little room for choice in the assigning of the service classification and rate. For example, you can choose whether you prefer a regular type of service (SC1) or a time-of-use service (SC6), but you cannot choose a general service (SC2) unless you have a large residence, with a high power load requirement, with a 3-phase power input system.

Rate

On the other hand, the choice in the rate (E100, E110, etc.) will be made by the utility company. This will purely depend on the appliances that are present in your home (electric water heater or not, space heating needed or not). In you do not have a water heater in your home, then there is not need for you to ask for a rate which includes electric water heating. In any case, the different rates (E) within a given service classification (SC) will not change the price of your electricity. No additionnal charges will be added to your bill for having or not having an electric water heater. Why then should there be different rates, if nothing changes in the bill ? In fact the different types of E rates are simply a way for Central Hudson to keep track of how many customers have what type of appliances in their home. This may have many different uses, including understand the demand in order to better organize the supply, as well as better calculate the predicted supply charges.
