Our Take On Penstar Power
Based on our investigation into Penstar Power's rates, contract options, and customer reviews, we rate the company out of five stars.
Penstar Power provides a limited range of power options, but unlike many Texas REP they offer prepaid plans, which may be interesting to some Texas consumers. They also seem to have a high customer satisfaction rate

|Fixed Rate Plan||6 months||
In general we would probably recommend a longer-term fixed rate option, but choosing a six-month contract could be more convenient for some (e.g. if you think you might be moving house in the near future).
In general we don't recommend variable rates. Find out why
Explanation of Rate Options
Fixed vs Variable Rates Options
A fixed rate does not change over the whole period of the contract, meaning that for the length of the contract (3, 6, 12, or 24 months) the price you pay for electricity in ¢/kWh does not change. In general we recommend choosing fixed rate contracts of at least 12 months or more. As electricity prices per kilowatt-hour fluctuate throughout the year, and you may actually lose money by not being able to take advantage of prices when they are low. However, because electricity prices tend to increase over time, locking in fixed rates for longer periods may prove advantageous and deliver savings. You can find more information about fixed rates in our guide.
In general, we do not recommend variable rates, as most customers report negative experiences with them. With prices not guaranteed after the first month, variable rates tend to be highly unpredictable. Find out more about variable electricity prices in Texas.
Instead of receiving a monthly bill for your past power consumption, with prepaid power you pay for your electricity in blocks, topping it off as you use it. The main advantage of prepaid electricity plans is that they don't require security deposits or credit checks. However, rates are often higher than "postpaid" options, and disconnection procedures are often much shorter. Find out more about prepaid plans in our guide.
Base Charges/Minimum Usage Fees
Base charges are flat charges that are charged every month regardless of the amount of power consumed. Minimum usage fees kick in when customer consumption is below a certain minimum monthly threshold. Penstar Power charges a $4.95 monthly service fee for both its fixed and variable price plans that is factored into the price at all consumption levels.
We give Penstar Power a rating.
There are few customer reviews of Penstar Power online. As both the Texas PUC and the Better Business bureau have rated Penstar Power positively due to the low number of complaints filed, we can assume that most Penstar Power customers are satisfied with their service.
