Are you eligible for compensation in Massachusetts?
DPU requires Eversource, National Grid and Unitil to accept spoilage claims and to file emergency response plans. Reimbursement is per claim, not automatic, but the DPU enforces fair processing.
Are you eligible right now?
Outage 48+ hours typically qualifies. File the spoilage claim on your utility’s site within 30 days with receipts. Disputed claims go to the DPU consumer division.
How to file:
- Document the outage: start time, end time, photos of spoiled food and damaged appliances, receipts for replacement purchases.
- Go to your utility’s claims page (linked above in the “who to call” section) and submit within 30–60 days.
- If your claim is denied or stalls, file a consumer complaint with the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities — they have authority over the utility.
- For damages from a federally declared disaster, also check disasterassistance.gov for FEMA Individual Assistance.
Renters: a standalone food spoilage benefit in your HO-4 policy (typically $500–$1,000, no deductible) may cover what your utility won’t. See the renters insurance breakdown.
