Fixed Rate Options
We generally recommend fixed rate contracts with alternate suppliers, because variable rates are not regulated by your local government and can end up being more expensive than your local utility.
Electricity customers should opt for contract periods of 18 months or more, because the price of electricity per kilowatt-hour may drop over the period of a year, so that customers on fixed rate plans cannot take advantage of lower prices when the market drops. However, the price of electricity is actually rising over time, so longer term contracts can be a good deal.
