About PSE&G in West Orange

PSE&G is the trade name of Public Service Electric and Gas Company, the regulated utility subsidiary of Public Service Enterprise Group (NYSE: PEG). The company traces back to 1903, when more than 400 local gas, electric and trolley operators merged into Public Service Corporation; today PSE&G is New Jersey's largest electric and gas distributor and one of the ten largest combined utilities in the United States.

In Essex County PSE&G delivers electricity and natural gas to West Orange, Newark, East Orange, Orange, Bloomfield, Montclair, Belleville, Irvington, Maplewood, South Orange and Nutley. The 59 Main Street location in West Orange is one of 16 walk-in Customer Service Centers PSE&G operates in New Jersey; it handles bill payments by check or money order, smart-meter exchanges and account questions in person.

Like every NJ wires utility, PSE&G is delivery-only on the supply side: the electricity you use comes from a statewide Basic Generation Service (BGS) auction held annually, or from a third-party supplier you chose. Delivery and metering remain with PSE&G either way.

The 2026 BGS rate change in plain English

Every February, NJ utilities run a joint Basic Generation Service auction. The clearing prices reset PSE&G's default supply rate every June 1. The 2026 auction cleared in February 2026 and the new rate took effect June 1, 2026.

What it means for you

The BGS rate is only the supply half of your bill. Delivery, the Societal Benefits Charge and a handful of small adders stay with PSE&G and are set separately by the BPU. If you stay on BGS the rate moves once a year and you pay a small risk premium. If you shop, you can lock a price for 12 to 36 months, but read the contract: many ESCO offers reset after an introductory period.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay my bill in cash at the West Orange office?
PSE&G's Customer Service Centers generally accept check and money order payments. For cash payments, use a PSE&G authorized walk-in pay agent. PSE&G does not accept prepaid debit cards or gift cards under any circumstances. Confirm what the West Orange counter currently accepts by calling 1-800-436-7734 before you visit.
Can I shop for a cheaper electricity supplier in NJ?
Yes. New Jersey deregulated retail electric supply in 1999. You can stay on PSE&G Basic Generation Service or pick a licensed third-party supplier (ESCO). PSE&G remains the delivery utility either way and is still the company you call for outages, meter issues and emergencies.
What do I do if I smell gas?
Leave the building immediately. Do not flip switches, light matches or use a phone inside. Once safely outside, call PSE&G's 24/7 gas-emergency line at 1-800-880-7734 or 911 if there is fire or injury. PSE&G dispatches a technician within roughly 60 minutes.
Who do I call for a downed power line?
Call PSE&G 24/7 at 1-800-436-7734. If a wire is on the ground or anyone is hurt, dial 911 first. Never approach a downed line; assume it is energized.
Is help available if I cannot pay my bill?
Yes. Call PSE&G at 1-800-357-2262 to set up a deferred payment plan (one is guaranteed per year). NJ households may also qualify for LIHEAP, Universal Service Fund (USF), New Jersey SHARES, PAGE, or the Winter Termination Program (Nov 15 to Mar 15 shut-off protection).
