The 3-business-day stop-service playbook

PSEG LI asks for 3 business days notice before your move-out date. Online or by phone, the steps are the same.

  1. 1

Gather your PSEG LI account number, the service address and your forwarding address.

Account number is on any PSEG LI bill, on My Account, or by quoting your service address to a representative.

  2. 2

    Schedule the final meter read.

Submit the Stop Service request through My Account on psegliny.com or call 1-800-490-0025 Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Give 3 business days notice; PSEG LI can read remotely for AMI meters or send a technician for legacy meters.

  3. 3

    Confirm the forwarding address.

PSEG LI mails the final bill to your forwarding address roughly 2 to 4 weeks after the final read. Do not skip this; the final bill includes any LIPA tariff true-up and any Balanced Billing settle-up.

  4. 4

Pay the final bill on time.

Even after move-out, an unpaid balance can be sent to collections and affect future utility deposits anywhere in NY. If you cannot pay in full, call before the due date and ask for a Deferred Payment Agreement.

If your move-out date slips, call before the original date. Failing to update the stop date can leave you billed for the new occupant's usage, or worse, leave the property without service for an incoming tenant. One call resets the schedule.

Two move-out scenarios on Long Island

Scenario A · Moving inside PSEG LI

Transferring within Nassau, Suffolk or the Rockaways

One phone call handles both ends: PSEG LI closes the old address and opens the new one under the same account number. The two records are linked so you do not lose history or auto-pay enrolment.

Allow at least 3 business days for the close-and-open. If the new address has a disconnected meter, allow up to 5 business days for the field reconnect.

Scenario B · Leaving Long Island

Moving outside PSEG LI territory

Close the PSEG LI account at the old address; PSEG LI cannot open a new account for you anywhere else. Contact the new area's utility directly to set up service there.

If you have an ESCO supply contract, you must close that separately (see below). If you have a National Grid gas account on LI, close that with National Grid at 1-800-642-5955.

What to do with an ESCO supply contract

PSEG LI cannot close your ESCO supply contract for you. Read your ESCO agreement before you move — the move-related clauses determine whether you can transfer, terminate without fee or owe an early-termination charge.

  • Option 1 · Transfer the ESCO contract to your new address

Possible only if your new address falls inside the ESCO's licensed service territory (usually a NY utility footprint). Call the ESCO directly with your new address and your new utility's account number once you have one.

  • Option 2 · Terminate without fee under the move-out clause

Most ESCO contracts include a "moving" or "relocation" exception that waives the early-termination fee if you provide proof of relocation. Send the ESCO a copy of the new lease, deed or utility bill from your new address.

  • Option 3 · Pay the early-termination fee

If neither transfer nor a move-out waiver applies, terminating mid-contract will incur the fee specified in your agreement (usually $50 to $200 for residential plans). Check the terms before signing the original ESCO contract; reputable suppliers waive the fee on relocation.

If you have gas: close it with National Grid

PSEG Long Island does not deliver gas. Closing the PSEG LI electric account does not close the gas account; you must call National Grid separately.

Never call PSEG LI for gas. PSEG LI cannot dispatch a gas crew, cannot close a gas account and is not the utility for gas on Long Island.

Frequently asked questions

How much notice does PSEG LI need to stop service?
At least 3 business days. PSEG LI uses the notice window to schedule the final meter read; for advanced AMI meters the read is automated and the close is essentially instant on the move-out date once the request is logged.
When will I get the final bill?
PSEG LI mails the final bill to your forwarding address roughly 2 to 4 weeks after the final meter read. It includes any Balanced Billing settle-up, partial-month delivery and supply charges and the close-out of any ESCO supply line. Confirm the forwarding address before you cut off mail forwarding.
Can I close the account online?
Yes. Submit the Stop Service request from My Account on psegliny.com. If you are also opening service at a new PSEG LI address, doing both via the phone keeps everything on one account number and avoids re-entering ID and bank details.
Do I owe an early-termination fee on my ESCO contract?
Read your ESCO contract. Most include a relocation clause that waives the early-termination fee when you provide proof of move (new lease, deed or utility bill). If your new address is inside the ESCO's licensed territory, transferring the contract is usually possible. Otherwise, the fee schedule in the contract applies.
What about my National Grid gas account?
Close it separately. Call National Grid at 1-800-642-5955. Closing the PSEG LI electric account does NOT close the gas account; National Grid is the gas distribution utility for Long Island. For any gas smell during the move-out, call 1-800-892-2345.
Will my deposit be refunded?
If you paid a deposit at activation and your account is in good standing at move-out, PSEG LI applies the deposit (plus accrued interest at the rate set by NY DPS) against the final bill. Any surplus is refunded by cheque to your forwarding address. If the account has a past-due balance, the deposit is netted against it first.
