Best time to call: avoid Monday morning

Call-center traffic at PPL follows the same weekly pattern as most U.S. utilities. Tuesday through Thursday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. is the off-peak window, with reported average wait times under 2 minutes. Monday mornings and the day after a holiday can run 15 minutes or longer.

Best: Tue to Thu, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Average reported wait under 2 minutes. Agents have full bandwidth to set up plans, run credit checks, and authorize payment extensions.

Workable: Fri afternoons

Quieter than weekday mornings, but agents may not handle complex multi-step requests before the weekend.

Avoid: Mon morning, post-holiday

Waits commonly exceed 15 minutes. Outage calls also spike here, so non-urgent requests sit in a backlog.

How to spot a fake "PPL" caller

Utility-impersonation scams cost U.S. consumers tens of millions of dollars each year per FTC complaints. A real PPL agent will never demand payment by gift card, prepaid debit card or wire transfer.

  • !Demands payment within the hour with same-day shut-off. PPL gives 10 days' written notice for any disconnection.
  • !Asks for a gift-card number, prepaid card or wire transfer. Real PPL only takes bank draft, credit card via BillMatrix, mailed check or walk-in cash.
  • !Cannot read back your last bill amount or account number. A legitimate PPL agent can verify both. Hang up if they cannot.
  • If unsure, hang up and dial PPL directly at 1-800-342-5775. Report the scam to the PA PUC Bureau of Consumer Services at 1-800-692-7380.
