Our Take on Amigo Energy

As one of the oldest REP in Texas, Amigo Energy offers familiarity and dependability as a supplier of electricity. The REP has a wide range of offers, including innovations like plans with free electricity at night. However, we have noticed some consumer complaints regarding responsiveness and transparency of pricing. Compare reviews with other suppliers.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Amigo Energy

Amigo Energy offers several advantages for customers, including

  • $25 credit for customer referrals
  • Competitive rates, particularly for new customers
  • Wide range of plan options, with innovations such as free electricity at nights, free AAA Texas membership, online plans, and more
  • Option to blend and extend existing plan to if desired

However, as no company is perfect, electricity customers in Texas might want to be aware of the following

  • Automatic renewal to variable rate products: while many customers reported savings on fixed rates, we noticed a pattern of complaints of customers whose rates increased dramatically once their plan ended and they had been automatically switched to a variable rate. As variable rates can change at the discretion of the supplier, there is no price security, and customers often encounter nasty surprises.
  • Late payment fees/disconnection: Amigo Energy appears to be very reactive when payments are late. We recommend signing up for automated payment to avoid disconnection problems
  • Hidden fees: some customers reported discrepencies between the rates advertised and what they were charged for their electricity supply. Customers on online plans should be aware that they may be charged additional fees for not-online customer service

Explanation of Plan Options

Fixed vs Variable Rates Options

A fixed rate does not change over the whole period of the contract, meaning that for the length of the contract (3, 6, 12, or 24 months) the price you pay for electricity in ¢/kWh does not change. In general we recommend choosing fixed rate contracts of at least 12 months or more. As electricity prices per kilowatt-hour fluctuate throughout the year, and you may actually lose money by not being able to take advantage of prices when they are low. However, because electricity prices tend to increase over time, locking in fixed rates for longer periods may prove advantageous and deliver savings. You can find more information about fixed rates in our guide.

In general, we do not recommend variable rates, as most customers report negative experiences with them. With prices not guaranteed after the first month, variable rates tend to be highly unpredictable. Find out more about variable electricity prices in Texas.

Some customers have reported savings on fixed rate electricity plans from Amigo Energy. Fixed rate plans can often be a good deal if you are able to lock in a good rate at the right time of year.

Base Charges/Minimum Usage Fees

Base charges are flat charges that are charged every month regardless of the amount of power consumed. Minimum usage fees kick in when customer consumption is below a certain minimum monthly threshold. Amigo Energy charges a minimum usage fee for consumption under 1,000 kWh per month on many plans. At $9.95 to $19.95, Amigo Energy minimum usage fees are among the highest charged by Texas REPs.

However, Amigo Energy also offers bill credits on consumption over a 1,000 kWh for some plans. Depending on the plan, the credit can be as high as $80.

Green Energy Plans

While Amigo Energy does offer "green" plans, we recommend that customers seeking to support green energy look elsewhere. Amigo Energy's green products are sourced from supposedly 100% renewable content, but the REP also states that green plans may include natural gas. The REP also reserves the right to take up to three months following the close of a calendar year to make up any deficiency in a particular resource.
