Signing up for Service
Customers moving in to RG&E service territory should be sure to call the company's customer service line at least one and a half weeks in advance to ensure that service begins in time. You can also turn on service in person at your local RG&E office. For natural gas customers, a technician will also need to come to your home to get an accurate meter reading.
Rochester Gas & Electric(RG&E) service territory includes towns like Rochester, Geneseo, Butler, Caledonia, and more.
You will need to provide the following information to open a new account with RG&E:
- Full name
- Social security or passport information
- New address
- Planned move-in date
- Place of employment
- If rental property: Lease type
RG&E's main customer service line can be reached at 1-800-743-2110 from Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
How to Choose an ESCO
RG&E is your local utility, which means they are your automatic provider of natural gas service. This includes:
- Delivery, or all costs related to getting energy to your home
- Supply, or the cost of the actual energy you consume + customer service charges
If you choose an alternate Energy Supply Company (ESCO) you can save on your supply charges. You will need to open your RG&E account before shopping around for an ESCO plan, since the ESCO will need your account information to take over supply service.
We recommend fixed rate plans across the board, because they offer more stability. These plans come with contracts, so you should be aware of common contract conditions before signing up.

Terminating your Service
If you are moving out of RG&E territory, you will need to call customer service or visit in person at least 10 days in advance of your move, to be sure that you are not billed for extra days. For natural gas customers, a technician will need to come to your home to get an accurate final meter reading.
In order to cancel your ESCO contract, you will not need to take any extra steps.
However, to avoid paying an early cancellation fee, you will need to contact your ESCO usually around 30 days in advance. Check your contract conditions to know your plan's specifics.
Understanding your Bill
Your RG&E bill is divided up by supply, delivery, and state and local taxes. Most residential customers are classified under the SC1 rate category.
The New York Public Service Commission (NYPSC) regulates your RG&E charges - which means that all rate increases have been approved by NYPSC.
