Signing up for RG&E service in Canandaigua

If you are moving into a new home in Canandaigua, you will need to either visit your local office or call RG&E at least one and a half weeks before moving in, to ensure that your natural gas and/or electricity service is turned on in time.

In order to open a new account with RG&E and begin service, you will need to provide the following:

  • New Address
  • Planned move-in date
  • Social Security or Passport Number
  • Employer
  • Lease type, if rental property

You can reach RG&E's main customer service line at 1-800-743-2110, from Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM.

Switching to an Alternate ESCO Supplier

All Canandaigua residents automatically receive natural gas and/or electricity service from RG&E, because it is your local utility. RG&E covers:

  • Delivery, or the cost of getting energy to your home
  • Supply, or the cost of energy you consume and customer service fees

If you pick an alternate Energy Supply Company (ESCO), you will have the opportunity to save on your supply charges. All RG&E customers have the right to choose an ESCO.

You must open your RG&E account before you can choose an ESCO. This is because your ESCO of choice will coordinate your supply based on your RG&E account number. Most ESCOs do not charge a fee to start service, but you should be aware of other common contract terms.

Though most ESCOs offer fixed and variable rate plans, we recommend fixed rate plans across the board. Learn more about how ESCOs work.

Terminating Service

If you are moving to a new home outside of RG&E territory, you will need to call customer service at least 5 business days before your scheduled move out date, to ensure that you will not be charged for extra service. A technician will need to come to your home to get a final meter reading for natural gas customers.

In order to avoid cancellation fees with your ESCO, you may need to notify your ESCO up to 30 days in advance of your move. Be sure to look at your plan's contract conditions for specific instructions.

Bill Charges with RG&E

Your Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E) bill shows your charges divided up by supply, delivery, and taxes. Most residential customers are charged in the SC1 rate class.

The New York Public Service Commission (NYPSC) regulates all rates with RG&E, which means that the utility cannot make any changes to the rates you pay unless NYPSC has determined that there have been actual changes to the cost of doing business at RG&E.

The below graph shows the average division of an RG&E bill.
