How your Eversource bill is built

Every MA bill has two halves. Eversource is always the delivery company, but you can choose who handles supply.

Supply (shoppable)

  • ·The price of the kWh you actually use.
  • ·Basic Service from Eversource if you do nothing, reset every 6 months for residential.
  • ·Competitive supplier or municipal aggregation if you shop.
  • ·Switching never changes your wires or your bill payee.

Delivery (not shoppable)

  • ·The cost of moving electricity through Eversource wires.
  • ·Customer charge, a flat monthly fee paid even at zero kWh.
  • ·Distribution + transmission per-kWh charges.
  • ·Small adders for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and distributed solar.

Frequently asked questions

Is Eversource the same as NSTAR?
Yes. NSTAR merged with Northeast Utilities in 2012 and the combined group rebranded as Eversource Energy in 2015. The wires, meters, and rate schedules are the same company; only the name on the bill changed.
Can I pick a competitive supplier in Eversource territory?
Yes. Massachusetts has retail choice for investor-owned utility customers. You can keep Basic Service from Eversource or sign up with a licensed competitive supplier. Eversource still delivers the power and sends the bill either way.
Who do I call for a downed power line?
Eversource's 24/7 outage line at 1-800-592-3000. If a wire is on the ground or anyone is hurt, call 911 first, then Eversource.
What do I do if I smell gas?
Leave the building first. Do not flip switches, light matches, or use a phone inside. Once outside, call the 24/7 gas emergency line at 1-800-286-2000 or 911.
How often does the Basic Service rate change?
For residential customers, every 6 months. Eversource buys supply at wholesale auction approved by the DPU and resells it at cost. Compare any competitive offer to the current Basic Service rate, not last winter's.
