About Wolfeboro Municipal Electric

Wolfeboro Municipal Electric Department is a municipal light plant (MLP) owned and governed by the Town of Wolfeboro. It was established in 1893, only fourteen years after Edison's commercial electric system started in New York, making it one of the oldest continuously operating municipal electric utilities in the country. The original hydro generation has long since been retired; today the department buys wholesale power on the New England market and resells it to roughly 3,800 meters in Wolfeboro and a small slice of neighboring New Durham.

Wolfeboro is one of the eight surviving NH municipal electric utilities, alongside Ashland, Woodsville, Littleton, Hudson, New Hampton, Madbury, and Wolfeboro Falls. As a muni, Wolfeboro is outside the retail-choice market: it bills a single bundled rate (no separate supply/delivery split), is not regulated by the NH PUC, and is governed by an elected board of electric commissioners reporting to the Town.

The department's office at 133 Middleton Road, Wolfeboro NH 03894 (PO Box 777) handles billing, new connections, and dispatches the line crew. The 2026 residential rate of about $0.14/kWh places Wolfeboro among the cheapest electric providers in New Hampshire.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch to a competitive supplier on Wolfeboro's lines?
No. NH municipal light plants opted out of retail choice. Wolfeboro buys wholesale power on the New England market and bills a single bundled rate. The trade-off: rates are typically well below the statewide IOU average, and decisions are made by an elected local board rather than the PUC.
How do I start service when I move in?
Call (603) 569-6975 or stop by 133 Middleton Road at least 2 business days before move-in. Bring photo ID, your move-in date and the service address. A small connect fee applies; a deposit may apply for tenants without a prior payment history.
Does Wolfeboro support solar net metering?
Yes. Wolfeboro offers net metering for residential rooftop systems sized to the customer's annual consumption. Excess generation is credited at the department's avoided-cost rate, not the full retail rate. The application must be approved before installation.
Why are Wolfeboro's rates lower than Eversource's?
Wolfeboro is not-for-profit, its 130-year-old distribution system is fully depreciated, and it buys wholesale power directly rather than through a six-month default-service auction with risk premium. The trade-off is a much smaller crew for storm restoration, mutual aid from neighboring utilities helps fill the gap.
Who do I call for a downed power line?
Call (603) 569-6975. After business hours the line routes to the on-call lineman. If anyone is hurt or a wire is on the ground, dial 911 first. Do not approach a downed line; assume it is energized.
